Just got back...missed all the fun. Not gonna stir the pot...glad you're safe...good job. :!: One question/comment...do you feel pretty strongly about carrying unchambered?...I know a lot of guys (maybe most) feel pretty strongly the other way.
Stu, It depends on the firearm. I can rack a slide as quick or quicker than most. If the firearm is double action only, as is with my Walther P99 DAO, the trigger action works just like a revolver. When you pull the trigger, you are cocking the firing mechanism just like a revolver is pulling back the hammer. A DAO is just as safe with one in the chamber as it is unchambered. If it is a Glock or XD type firearm, with one in the chamber, it takes a very light touch of the trigger to fire the first round. If it is a 1911, I can rack the slide almost as quickly as I can take off the safety. So, to answer your question, with semiautomatics, it depends on what pistol I'm carrying.
LCP is DAO, isn't it? Then there is the issue of your other hand possibly being occupied. Anyhow, good job...I don't always chamber, either.
We're talking about carrying the gun with or without a round in the chamber...if you are unchambered you have to use two hands and rack the slide to get the first round into the chamber and get the gun ready to fire. (unless your really good like the Israeli military and can catch the slide and rack it one handed on your belt).
Stu, You are correct that LCP is DAO. However, since the issue of the recall (dropping it with a chambered round could cause accidental discharge) I had been carrying it unchambered. I have had the recall performed on it and it is now very safe to carry chambered... I just have not gotten into the habit of doing so yet. I have only had it back from the recall about a month. By the way, I just bought Cindy an LCP last night. I like that firearm very much for it's concealability. I had on my orange Tennessee shorts when this happened. You can not tell that I have it in my pocket.
Gotcha... Now play nice, boys...told you I didn't want to stir that pot again. Have you seen the new LCR?
I have not found one yet. I have only seen the release on the Ruger site: The Ruger LCR I have one concern: I have not seen the left side of the frame to see how the cylinder is reloaded. I have a dealer on Gunbroker that is going to alert me as soon as they are available.
Stu, The lightest revolver I own is 15 ounces. The LCR weighs in at 13.5 ounces. However, that is 4 ounces heavier than the LCP weighing in at 9.4 ounces. I may not spring for it but I do want to see one.
I'm going to assume that Plaxico had a chambered gun in his pocket. Could he have been so stupid as to have the safety off also? If you guys can remember far enough back this is the guy who when a H/S senior announced he was committed to Florida....but Florida never offered because his academics were abysmal.
Stu, Almost all ammo has dried up here. However, I can get almost anything I need on Gunbroker. I just performed a search and found all kinds of .380 ammo
Stu, I don't remember if I told you or not but I finally bought a 327. I was disappointed in the Ruger SP101 offering since they had nothing shorter than 3" and all 327 models had an adjustable rear site that would probably hang in a pocket. I wound up buying the Taurus model 327 that will fire both .32 S&W and .327 Federal Magnum. I also purchased a SP101 but in .357 Magnum. That cal comes in 2.25" and smooth channel rear site for ease of draw. I will probably fire more .38 +P than .357 magnum because of the weight. The only 357 revolver that I own and actually fire .357 rounds is the GP100. I am pretty well set for ammo. I have a stockpile of .22 WMR, .22 LR, .38 +P, .327 Federal Mag, .357 Mag, .357 Sig, 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. I have close to 1000 rounds of each except for 9mm, of which I have about 5000 rounds. I saw this shortage coming about this time last year. I started stocking up so that I could weather the famine. Academy Sports had Blazer 9mm on sale for $4.97 per box of 50 with a limit of 10 boxes. I made 12 trips into that store buying a total of 6000 rounds before the manager said "NO MORE".
I don't have that much but I have enough... Dave, Plaxico was indeed carrying a chambered Glock...Tom can correct me if I'm wrong...but here is my understanding; Glocks have no classic external safety lever...they have a trigger safety, an internal firing pin safety, and a drop safety. The only way that they can be fired is for the trigger to be pulled back...with a finger depressing the safety on the trigger. Guns should be carried in holsters...for several reasons, but safety is the main one. My understanding (could be wrong) is that Burris was carrying the thing in the band of his sweatpants...it slipped through and he felt it dropping and he grabbed at it through his sweats and got the trigger.
I don't know the details on the Burris Blunder but Stu is dead on with the details of Glock safety. The trigger is a two piece design. One piece, the actual trigger, has a slot in it. Another bar fits through that slot. That bar must be depressed for the trigger to function. Springfield XD has a similar trigger design but also incorporates a similar lever in the backstrap of the grip. With the XD, the area between the thumb and finger of the hand has to depress the backstrap lever and the trigger lever must be depressed before the trigger will move. I have a Glock 30 but I prefer XD for poly pistols.
