He's Tenneseean by birth just like Mack Brown!!

On Saturday morning in his office, just before heading out to practice in the Texas heat, Mack Brown got a taste of home when he was visited by a group from his native Tennessee, including state representative Jere Hargrove, Cookeville city councilman Rick Shelton, his brother Mel and two of his former Cookeville high school teammates and friends, Ralph Mullins and Otis Phillips.

The reason for their trip was to honor one of Tennessee's brightest sons by presenting Brown with a resolution from the Tennessee legislature, a proclamation from the city of Cookeville and the key to his hometown.

"The House resolution was a joint effort of a lot of us," said Hargrove. "First of all, we're proud of all of the Browns. Mel still lives in Cookeville, and we watch (his brother and Alabama-Birmingham head coach) Watson, as well, but since Mack led his team to a National Championship, we thought it was appropriate. It came out of the legislature in Tennessee, and it was a very popular move. It's certainly something that should be honored, and although it was accomplished in Texas, the state of Tennessee and Mack's hometown of Cookeville are very proud of him."

The resolution outlines the accomplishments of his career and was sponsored by Hargrove, who is retiring after 16 years in the legislature. It was signed by the Speaker of the House, the Lieutenant Governor and the Governor of Tennessee.

"We're very proud of Coach Brown and what he's accomplished and what positive light that's brought to our community of Cookeville," followed Shelton, who presented the proclamation from Cookeville that highlighted his accomplishments back to his high school playing days. "We wanted to do something to honor him, and we're glad to be here and be able to present that."

The group received a guided tour by Brown of the facilities, including the locker room where the players were arriving for the Saturday morning practice, and then presented the honors in Brown's office.

"It's absolutely unbelievable," Shelton said. "I've always heard about this, and I follow Tennessee football being in Cookeville, and this is everything I thought it would be and even more. Just to see the facilities and what these student athletes get to participate in, and the environment they're in is incredible."

It is all part of the program Brown has built into a National Champion based on the strength of character of everyone involved and what led to his being honored.

"What impresses me about Coach Brown is his dedication to the student-athletes, and making sure they're academically sound," described Shelton. "Even talking about recruits, that's one of the first things they look at when they recruit someone – what kind of student athlete they're going to be and are they going to be a citizen of the community. Going in the locker room and seeing those guys there. They're all very friendly, their attitudes are great, they act like gentlemen, and that's a testament to the head coach and what he instills in them."

Where was Spurrier from?

Simple... Mack Brown was not, and is not, a "Richard" head to Tennessee. SOS turned his back on Tennessee and cast insults one after another at Tennessee.

If Tennessee ever gives anything to SOS, he better have it checked out thoroughly. I still remember a UT vs UF game at Neyland when a little red dot kept dancing on Spurrier's chest. There was speculation of a rifle laser sight. :wink:

Spurrier was not born in Tennessee, he was born in Florida and his family moved to Tennessee.

He went to Florida to play football because he didn't think his talent would fit well in a single wing offense. :twisted: :twisted:
