https://www.seccountry.com/team/steve-spurrier-receives-new-role-with-florida-athletics To no one's surprise.... Steve Spurrier is back with UF in an official capacity. Now if he could just suit up and play quarterback.... 8)
Dave, I am always pleased to read about alumni returning home. Sounds like a winning situation for all concerned.
Good for him, I doubt if he does much around there except be available for various functions and meeting with donors. I doubt if Coach Mac will have him in for meetings on game week and I doubt if SOS has much interest in sticking his nose into the football programs. Golf and enjoy life.
The Sentinel is reporting the Spurrier just reported that Del Rio is the starter for the University of Florida. Coach McElwain has stated that he hasn't decided who is the starter. I guess he needs to ask Coach Spurrier.
This might get fun: I think Coach Mac and his guys did an excellent job,” Spurrier said. “Knowing Coach Mac, he wants more than just the Eastern division. So, they’re looking forward to growing this program to one of the best in the nation. They want this program to win SEC championships like we’ve done in the past.”
That too Kp.... I have to believe that having another great offensive mind around campus can only benefit the Qbs and the offense. I think last year we saw particularly in the thrashing of a very good Ole Miss team what Coach Mac can do with a good Qb like he had with Will Grier so I do believe he is a very good offensive mind. Throw in a little ball play suggestion or two from Spurrier once in a while and it could be fun to watch for sure.
If I'm the head coach, I'm going to do everything possible to avail myself of the invaluable resource that now is available to me. I would expect him to be using Spurrier as a consultant on a continuing basis.
I hear what y'all are saying. I just wonder what will happen when Coach Mac does something that the OBC doesn't agree with. The OBC has never been shy about taking shots....at anyone. We'll see. 8)
Well said Sid. I think Mac is an offensive minded coach who is smart enough to take advantage of any resource that can help him to achieve the offensive results he covets. Those last three games of last season must have made him sick because that's not the kind of offensive production he is used to. Hence Treon Harris has moved on and Mac now has a Steve Spurrier to consult with for the next Florida Qb. The prospects for the UF offense are looking up.
I would be shocked if he didn't... I predict a power struggle between Foley and Spurrier, and between Spurrier and McElwain.
Tom, I'm not sure if there will be a power struggle but I think that Spurrier's mouth is going to cause McElwain problems. Like I said, it may be fun to watch. Spurrier has already named the starting qb before the head coach has. :?
Has SOS really commented on who should be the Gators starting QB. I mean SOS isn't the first legendary coach to be around the program he once coached. Royal was around Texas football for a long time after he retired, Ara never had an official position around ND football but he's stayed in South Bend and every ND coach including Lou has spent time with him during their tenure. Bo and Woody stayed around, Lloyd Carr is still around in spite of my multiple eulogies for him. I don't think in any of those instances that those coaches involved themselves with the coaching staff beyond being there if they wanted to talk.
