    Just curious as to your thoughts on whether Spurrier will ever turn South Carolina into a consistent winner. They have had some great moments early on in the Spurrier era but this season's 6-6 isn't very promising going forward in a year that Spurrier expected to contend for the East title. Unfortunately for him, the season doesn't end in mid-October.

    He was in the running

    <t>but then his defense (which was to be the backbone of the team) was totally gutted by injuries.<br/>
    <br/>
    He just doesn't have the depth, yet, to plug and play young talent in the program when someone else goes down.<br/>

    I understand that injuries are part of the game, but how good would Florida be without Tebow?</t>

    Corey, I don't even want to think of Florida without Tebow right now! :lol: :lol:

    As to Spurrier, his team started 6-1 and lost their last 5, several either in OT or last minute. I am not sure he will ever be able to develop the depth he needs while at S. Carolina.

    I think it's a long shot that Spurrier can get So. Carolina in to the same level as Tenn, UGA and UF. But if he is going to do it So.Car fans and AD are going to have to be patient and look at Missouri where it took Pinkel the 5+ years to get them where they are right now.

    I think Spurrier is obviously a great coach. That being said, he's not getting any younger and, in reality, South Carolina is not getting any better. It's an accomplishment, IMO, to get them to bowl games and winning records but I don't know if he'll ever be able to get them to the point of contending on a yearly basis. With every season that goes by without being in contention, it's going to get harder to lure recruits to Columbia. I think a lot of his mystique has worn off.

    At the beginning of this season I thought the answer was yes. Just maybe he had passed Georgia and could move on to competing for the east. Just when I had given up on UGA, Richt transforms a 180 degrees into a coach that seems to inspire his team. I wondered how in the world SC beat UGA this season. I even made a special trip to Vegas and bet UGA over SC. I was so sure I would win that game. That coach who lost that day is not the same coach at UGA now. With CMR coaching the way he is now, I don't see SC beating UGA too often. With Cutcliffe at UT, and CUM at Florida, How's SC going to move up in the East? Spurrier better get out of town. He should make a run for the Michigan job.

    You know I just thought about this... SC is really in a tough spot here.

    If Spurrier leaves SC w/o turning them around, SC may be forever ruined. That will make 2 of the best coach's, College football has ever known, to fail at SC. If those two fail, who can succeed? Who would want to know even Spurrier and Holtz couldn't win at my program?

    When

    <t>I look at coaching jobs, I look at resources.<br/>
    <br/>
    South Carolina is a small state, but it does have great in-state talent. Tennessee, Georgia, Miami and a few others regularly harvest South Carolina talent. They need to keep that talent in-state. They have the money. They have the facilities. The resources to win are there.<br/>
    <br/>
    While SOS and Holtz are two legendary coaches, the job strikes me as one that needs a great YOUNGER man to tackle it. Someone who can stick thru 5 to 8 years of being a 4 or 5 loss bowl team building toward something greater thru the years.<br/>
    <br/>
    The culture has to change and I don't see them having a 'quick change' overnight.</t>

    All I have to do is to point you guys to Kansas and Missouri as places that are as hard to win at as So.Carolina and both those guys who had such great seasons this year took 6+ years to get them to that point. It's not easy, and I do wonder if Spurrier has the patience at this point in his life. We'll see.
