A couple of things odd about St. Paddy's day. 1. Danny Boy was written by an Englishman (a lawyer) and isn't all that popular in Ireland. 2. Nobody in Ireland eats Corned Beef and Cabbage. 3. St. Patrick himself was an Englishman...well as much as England existed as an entity in his day.
One more thing...Corned beef has nothing to do with the #1 agricultural product of the great state of Nebraska!! It refers to the "corn" or coarse grains of salt used to cure the beef.
Facts and Figures. Ireland population before the Great Famine was 8 million, the population today is less than 5 million. There is no other country in the world whose population is less than it was in 1840. The Irish themselves are experiencing an immigration boom and the country that back in the 70's had very little foriegn born citizens is now 10% foreign born with Poles being the largest ethnic group. I assume most of the poles have moved to Kerry.
Very interesting stuff, Terry. My family used to think we were Scots-Irish but then we realized that we were just a bunch of mutts.
Ah yes the Scotch-Irish. Not really Irish, but mostly Scotish Presbyterians and Congregationalist who were sent to Ireland because they weren't really wanted in Scotland so they were sent to N.Ireland to sort of get rid of them. They weren't members of either the Church of England or it's sister Church of Ireland...that was the real problem for them and for the Catholics as well. But the 2 groups inspite of their common foe in the Anglican Church didn't really get along, easy to see as the Scot's likely didn't much care for Catholics or Anglicans. Terry
I'm 5/8 Irish. My mother was 100% Irish (Fleming) and my Dad was 1/4 each Irish, English, Scotch and German. I blame all my bad traits on the other 3/8.
Mutt here...the name is Flemish...but have Belgian, Scotch, German, English, French, and Mohawk ancestors...amongst others.
There is some Irish in the blood, as well as (at last count) Scotch, Dutch, and French. I'm sure there is more, probably even a little Melungeon mixed in there.
Sorry we have been working alot..joco made it thru the big layoff but found out his class size was going from 36 to 50 or more he spends all his time grading papers now .... thats 14 x 8 more students I dont think there is even room in his class room... it's wall to wall desks now ..But between work home softball,(grandaughters)baseball(grandson) my aunt (megan (volleyball and soceer) is off for a while she was injured in a tournament in San Diego 2 wks ago) I dont get home much but I am off today to spend some time w/ jim .... Love to you all ..NCAA GO IRISH good showing last night
50 in a class? Holy cow! That's terrible. He must be going nuts just trying to get his lessons across to the masses. What a shame. The kids will suffer because with those numbers their teacher can't possibly give them the attention they need, then the micro managing idiots will groan that the teachers aren't doing their jobs. It really sucks. Please tell him to hang tough in the face of this adversity.
The classes I teach are considered over crowded if there are more than 6 students. Of course 75% hands on and 25% theory demands 6 or less.
