Apparently the B10 commish is saying the SEC lets in a bunch of dummies that couldn't make it at B10 Colleges. I know that's kind of a harsh spin on his exact words, but I wouldn't be surprised if that is the reaction they get down in the SEC.

Do we really want to compare the academics at Florida vs. Ohio State?

Michigan, NW, Wisconsin, Purdue, Penn St and Indiana are top notch academically and hold up very well in comparison to the best schools in the SEC although I do not know how that translates into what kind of football players they allow.

I do know that players that can't get in to Florida frequently wind up in other Div 1 programs.

Interesting that Delaney felt the need to defend the Big Ten so strongly.

I read the letter. It's well-written, factual, and respectful of the SEC. At the same time, it's an in-your-face to those who run their mouths - or typewriters - unbothered by the facts. Nice going, Mr. Commissioner.

    Dave (and Terry)...

I posted the second article to point out what seems to me to be obvious...

He specifically states that he wrote the letter to debunk the idea that the B10 should lower academic standards...they are there for a reason.

He says what I have been saying all along to those who tout their wonderful graduation records (as they should)...that different schools have different missions...even within a conference...but they should not compromise that mission for athletics.

He specifically states that he does not accept or buy into the part about the SEC having lower standards...but he will let the SEC defend itself.

As far as vigorously defending his conference...well, duh, that is his job.

Oh, and yes we could compare academics at Florida and Ohio State, thank you very much.

Ohio State is in the top 60 universities ranked by US News and World Report(#57)...and is the top public school in the state of Ohio. Florida is ranked 10 places higher at #47.

OSU's rating is higher than I thought.

Good for OSU in that regard. I do think the schools I listed are higher ranked than OSU and most of the group higher than Florida even but I could be wrong.

Delaney just provoked my defensive side a little.

This has as you would guess invoked a rabid response over on Gator message boards.

Many are quick to point out how JuCo star LB Larry Grant couldn't get qualified to join his first choice Florida but he was accepted by the stringent Big Ten requirements at Ohio State.

"The Latest: Four-star LB Grant makes decision — 1/31/2006

It looked like the Sunshine State would be the destination for City College of San Francisco linebacker Larry Grant, but after being denied admission to Florida things opened up for the four-star talent. Grant visited...[details]"

The kid lacked one lousy math credit that he needed for Fla. admission, so now all the Gator fans have to paint him as some kind of moron that could only qualify for a dummy school like Ohio State.

    How typical.

FYI, since you brought it up, but chose not to look it up...

Florida is the second highest ranked SEC school.
The Big 10 has five schools ranked above or tied with Florida.
The SEC has 3 Schools ranked in the top 70.
The Big 10 has, uh, 11 schools ranked in the top 70.

    14 Northwestern
    17 Vandy
    24 Michigan
    34 Wisconsin
    41 Illinois
    47 PSU
    47 Fla
    57 tOSU
    60 Ga
    64 Purdue
    64 Iowa
    67 Minn
    70 Indiana
    70 MSU
    88 Tenn
    88 Bama

Nice to see that Florida would be in the top 5 academically in the Big Ten by these rankings.

I respect the Big 10 academically so that's pretty good company.

    Agreed. :)

Most of the top 25 are private institutions.

Regarding Academics, here's an article that surprises me to a certain degree as I never thought of Clemson as a top public school. But according to this article they are better academically than any SEC school other than Vanderbilt. And it's affecting their football program.

I guess I misread that article. They are 30th in the public school rankings not 30th in the overall rankings. So they wouldn't be ranked above UF or UGA.

It also points out that I made an error on my list...Clemson should be in there at #70 and I left them off inadvertantly  ...my apologies to SEC folks and I shall edit the post.

Duh...that's why I missed 'em allright.

I saw Terry's post and misinterpreted it.

I don't follow any of those minor conferences like the SEC.

Back to editing mode...see you later.

Florida is the highest ranked SEC school not named Vandy, right?

Having lived in Nashville for 10 years or so, I've got to make sure my boys get their due..... :) It's a great school but for some unknown reason at one point they asked me to be their Treasurer.....go figure!

I think this analysis only considers public schools.

    Sigh....no, I really suck at this research thing...obviously. :?

Vanderbuilt would be #17...just below Northwestern.

    Back to editing.
