I think that UMBC's thrashing of Va. last night was the greatest upset in the history of sports. Va. the number one overall seed gets pummeled by the number 64 seed. The "Retreivers" scored 53 second half points on a team that won a record number of ACC games this season going 20-1 and which was the regular season and conference champion. So improbable and so incredible that they won... and winning by 20 points the way they did was unexplainable! UMBC coach Ryan Odom will be rewarded with millions by a program like Georgia looking for a new coach. And can you imagine the prolific sales of shirts with the UMBC lettering flying off the internet shelves? Hell I want one of those!
It was not even close. UVA couldn't get the lead below 12 (I think) in the 2nd half. They never mounted any kind of run and never seemed to realize the position they were in. UMBC played an excellent game on both ends of the court. They looked like the #1 seed. I'm glad I happened to watch that one.
I made a lot of money in college betting on the Jets over the Colts (took odds instead of the 17 pts.) I wouldn't have touched the Buster Douglas-Mike Tyson fight.
Those examples listed of greatest upsets are good ones.... and all highly improbable in their own right. I think AppSt over Michigan is right up there as well.
NC State over Houston.... with Valvano running crazy all over the court. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICZ8HO8c9bw All good ones..... but UMBC was one tiny David slaying an extra large Goliath.
Definitely the "Miracle" Ali over Liston Ali over Foreman Spinks over Ali And all the games Nebraska lost from 1973 - 1998.
