I'm actually a little surprised at this comment that UF has more fans/money/etc than FSU. FSU had that 14 year run of not losing a bowl game and I think finishing in the top 10 or maybe top 5. I would have thought that during that period they would have taken over the state.
No surprise to me Terry. The Gators have more graduates, more influential people in Florida, more of a history (football and non football) and more rabid fans than either Miami or FSU. We can sell out the most easy of games and have a waithing list for season tickets. Miami hardly ever sells out their season tickets and I don't believe FSU does either. Being a Gator is something special. Even though I know saying that will probably bring some bombastic rebuttal from Gonzo, it's true. And it's also true that both the other programs don't care for the Gators, to a great degree it's envy.
Not surprised about Miami, but I figured that FSU being a state school and having tremendous success on the field that they would have passed the Gators by, esp since Bowden had a winning record vs Spurrier and I assume that he's probably got a pretty good edge over the Gators since he arrived. But I forgot that FSU is sort of a johnny come lately having been a girls school back in the 40's. That would account for the difference in size of fan base and influence in the state. University of Houston is sort of like that, it's a big school, but they could win 5 Nat'l Championships in the next 10 years and they wouldn't even come close to Texas or Texas A&M in terms of influence. Terry
FSU is more of a liberal arts school whereas a lot of the professions like law and especially medicine are UF educated. Engineering and finance are strong suits at UF as well. It was a joke to UF fans when Myron Rolle, the hotshot recruit this year for the nolies announced for FSU because of their "academics" and I think he even said their medical school. The one thing a UF student and an FSU student absolutely have in common is that they were both accepted to FSU. I was just looking at my recently arrived season tickets this morning and the thought crossed my mind how coveted these two sheets of tickets would be in the state of Florida. FSU and Miami can't say that.
That feeling about Myron Rolle was also expressed by a lot of ND fans, that he could with a straight face say he went to FSU for the academics and the Med school. Their Med school is pretty new isn't it? Rolle was a good student at a tough private school I believe and ND fans thought his supposed interest in academics would give us a shot. But apparently he thought FSU academics were better than ND academics!! Of course I'm of the opinion that when I hear a football player went someplace that is not considered a top academic school, for the academics, that what he means is the lack of academics! You know lots of easy courses and easy majors. It's legit. Terry
I love the Dan Jenkins quote <t>"They have the tradition of Wake Forest and the arrogance of Notre Dame.""</t>
