According to SI. Smart move for him and a big plus for the Irish. Kelly would have labored all year trying to serve two masters. Golson just made it easy on him.

So after getting a large part of the reps during spring ball, he now takes off. We have 2 young QBs Kizer and Wimbush who surely would have benefited from the time wasted on Golson in the spring. So after getting his ass thrown out of school for the 2013 season, he takes off now. Gee, I'm sure going to miss him.....not.

I'm really shocked at this, while Kelly never said he was the starter I think all you had to do was read between the lines and barring some drastic changes in August he was going to start against Texas.

The only thing I can think of is that he looked at Malik and figured that Kelly was going to play Malik and that if he had a bad 1st half he was going to sit the 2nd half and maybe he feared that once Malik got the reins he wouldn't be giving them up and he'd be on the bench.

While I was hoping that Golson would stay and be the "good" Golson, I think from what I saw of the bowl game and what I've read since then Malik has much more self confidence and is a leader in the Jr. Class. I think the team will respond very well to Malik being the starter.

I do agree with Gipper though that it sure would have been nice if he'd made his decision early and we could have worked the other QB's instead of him.

    Golson

<t>Mixed feelings on this. I guess because I just wanted him to be successful so bad. Just didn't trust him anymore, sadly. Kiser needs to get his act together fast cause Wimbush is the real deal. This also steps up the real need to retake a QB in this years recruiting class. <br/>

Congratulations young Mr Zaire, you get your wish and I get mine. We're counting on you. Can't wait for the Texas game!! <br/>

    Go Irish!!!</t>

The only way the Golson could transfer and not have to sit out is for him to graduate this spring. Most likely this was his plan all along but he kept it from Kelly until he was sure he'd passed his courses to graduate. A team player all the way EG.

Gip, being one who believes in the fundamental good in human nature, I respectfully disagree with your above assessment, but I'm not going to debate the issue. I read his exit letter and trust his sincerity. I also trust that he understands it's as good for ND football to relieve the traffic jam at QB as it is for him in pursuing a possible NFL career.

Once he receives his degree, he becomes a fellow ND alum. That alone earns my respect.

Don't you think that the best thing for ND football would have been for the QBs who are going to be on the team next fall to get the practice time that he wasted?

Might not be eligible for transfer to SEC school.

sect d. states that the transfer can't have been subject to Univ or Ath. Dept disciplinary action. I guess being dismissed for cheating would fit that.

You assume that he knew that he was going to transfer prior to or during spring practice. I don't believe that's the case. I believe that he wanted to stay, but when he could not open up a clear lead over Zaire, he recognized the risk that he might end up being #2. I believe that he took the time between spring practice and now to consult with his family and other trusted advisors and concluded that this was the best path for him. Heck, maybe he even got some under the table feedback from other programs. I don't have a problem with it.

I don't think Wimbush is on campus yet. Kizer got shafted in the spring though as he is now the clear backup.

Golson weakness is pressure situations and what could be more pressing than someone standing over your shoulder?

Its a win-win. Zaire is going to make us all happy, you watch.

I don't bear him any ill will and hope he's successful at his next school. Like Sid said he'll be a ND grad and hopefully proud of being an ND graduate. Dayne Crist was clearly proud to be and only left because he felt like from a football standpoint there was no reason to stay. Turns out in his case at least that there was no point in leaving either as he ended up on the bench at Kansas as well.

I'm sure Golson is hoping to go to a situation that allows him a guarantee of ssorts that he'll be the solid #1 and not looking over his shoulder for the hook all season and risk Zaire getting on the field and Wally Pipping him.

It's not clear to me if Kelly can block Texas or any other school on our schedule. It would seem to me that once a kid graduates that they should be free agents and get to go where they want. But it would certainly be stressful to have a kid like him over in Austin givng Charlie Strong all our offensive sets and stuff.

You know with Kelly's luck that Zaire will be injured. We'd end up with no QBs with any experience. Watch a video of the Mich. game where Crist went out and Montana and Rees tried to play. Ohio St. has 2 QBs better than Golson who will be sitting on the bench this season. Amazing.

That sucks, the kid is a player. It must be a grades issue. If it is I have to question why he was allowed to sign a LOI back in February.

just heard on WFAN in NY...Golson wants to play for a school that has a much higher opponent power rating .This way his stock in draft will rise. ND schedule for the coming year is very weak.
