No not Jordan Spieth...former Longhorn great! But nephew made it through local qualifying for the US Open this week. There were 600 guys who qualified to go to sectionals where they go 36 holes in one day for the right to go to the US Open. Next week he and his HS teammate will be at Winged Foot for the USGA Four Ball event. It's one of those hallowed old courses and is always ranked in the top of both US and World golf courses. He's also headed back to Pine Valley later this year for his 2nd Crump Cup later this year.
That's just great Doc. If he does well and get's through sectionals I can't think of anything more exciting for a golfer than being in the field at the US Open. As to Winged Foot and Pine Valley, what a great lineup. Never got to play either but got reports from Commish about both. He loved Pine Valley.
The commish really gets around!! What's his handicap? Did he inherit your soft touch around the greens! Here's an article on the USGA Four Ball, it's gives you 5 groups to watch one of them is Matt and his team mate Drew, they play Phil Mickelson's brother Tim in their first match! http://www.usga.org/championships/2016/u-s--amateur-four-ball/articles/u-s--amateur-four-ball--groupings-to-watch.html
Commish is probably a 7 or 8. He handled distribution for Golf Magazine for a number of years and the staff there occasionally invited him to some interesting courses. He also has good connections with the PGA tour that get him on places like Pine Valley. Needless to say dad gets jealous.
LOl...maybe that's what is wrong with Phil's game...worrying too much about the SEC probe and his portfolio. :? :?
Phil's problems have always been what he's been losing at Vegas. Strong rumor was that he switched his brand of woods just before the '02 Ryder Cup when Calloway offered to take care of 6 mil. he owed casinos. His current insider trading problems comes from his following instructions by a bookie to make money to repay gambling debts.
Well 1st day was very good for Matt and Drew, they shot a bogey free round of 63, sit tied for 2nd at -7, leader is -8. All the leaders played the East Course today, with the exception of Matt and Drew who played the West Course. So if the East Course is the easier course that bodes well for the guys maybe doing well again and making it through to Match Play. They did not advance to Match Play last year at the Olympic Club. http://www.usga.org/championships/2016/u-s--amateur-four-ball/scoring.html
Matt and his partner had another good day, they finished at -12 and that was tied for 2nd. So they have made it through to Match Play which starts tomorrow. Everybody is pretty excited for Matt and Drew.
http://www.usga.org/championships/2016/u-s--amateur-four-ball/articles/matthews-and-ross-medalists-at-u-s--amateur-four-ball.html The link above is to a USGA press release on the Stroke Play, the medalists were teammates at Temple and one of them played Shortstop in the Yankee's organization.
Terry, I read the link and found it to be very interesting. Maybe this round will be more satisfying.
Matt and Drew move on to the quarterfinals, 5-4, they were all square after 8 then they ran off 5 straight birdes. 2 rounds tomorrow.
Sid did I tell you Drew is an IU grad? 4.0 in Accounting/Finance and played 4 years on the Golf team. Back to this mornings matches. Matt and Drew won their Quarterfinal Match vs last years defending Champions. They got down 3 and then chipped away at that lead and finished them off to win 2 and 1! Not sure who they play in the Semi's this afternoon. It's been raining all day up there, sort of off and on.
