Torrey Pines...one of my favorite venues on tour. A course that is one of the few public tracks that has hosted Major championships. The South course is the toughest 18, but the North is much more scenic and forgiving. I've racked up about 25 rounds on the pines, and was there when Daly hit that beautiful bunker shot in sudden death to win his last tourney in 2004. Popular tourney with the PGA, it will be a stacked field with Tiger, Phil, Rory, GMac, etc., in town. Interupted by 2 1/2 hours of coverage on Mickelson and his "I can't afford to live in CA anymore" comments the other day. For you none golfers, tune in anyway for fantastic views of the cliffs of LaJolla and panoramic views of the Pacific. Also, the Para-Sailing folks will be on full display through the week. My picks: GMac or Keegan B. will be there at weeks end.
This is one of my favorite tournaments just for the scenery, similar to Pebble Beach, and, of course, Augusta.
My bride has an annual meeting that she attends every Feb. It's held at the Hilton at Torrey Pines. Once again I'll find a way to accompany her as the arm candy I am. The last 18 holes I walked was at Torry about 3 years ago.
I love this tournament...for me it is as AJ said the start of the year for the PGA Tour. I lived in San Diego but never played Torrey Pines, I played mostly at the Navy Complex (Admiral Kidd?) and at Balboa Park. You never know who will win these tournaments, it's always safe to pick Phil or Tiger or somebody who's got the record but you just never know. Anybody ever hear of Russell Henley before he won in Hawaii?
BTW AJ's new avatar is starting to get to me, I'm thinking of calling him and seeing if he wants to go for a drink!
Not familiar with that one, I know they have Admiral Baker out by Jack Murphy that I've played many times. Sea and Air on Coronado is the military man's Pebble.... Re: Balboa Park I've played that track a couple of times. They used to have the city tournament there back in the 70's. Some guy by the name of Stadler had his name on the trophy a couple of times.
OK Admiral Kidd was the O-Club right on the bay, you're right it was Admiral Baker Complex. We had a base golf tournament once a month, you got the day off if you entered. They flighted us after we turned in our scores so everybody got a prize...even if it was only a sleeve of golf balls. My Tech at the time had flunked out of OU and had played on the golf team there loaned me clubs and got me started. I hadn't played golf at that time since I was a kid in Fla.
Well the first tourney isn't over yet officially, but it very likely is. New season but strangely similar results.
El Tigre seems to be recovering some of the old mojo. Putting well and hitting amazing shots when the long stick puts him a fairway or two over.
Nick Watney gets to -15 while Tiger faulters and losses 2 strokes to bogey forcing a playoff. Tiger's putting fails him on the 2nd playoff hole, and Watney comes from behind to post his 2nd victory on Torrey.
