He nearly was fired last year. That collapse vs. TT was the final, final, straw.

He's developed some very good RB's at Minn. But eventually I think people get tired of you if you don't win a conf title once in awhile.

Mason took the Gophers to bowl games six out of the last seven years, Prior to that, they were one of the dregs of the B10 save for a brief period of time that Holtz, and prior to that, Joe Salem coached them. Their last glory years were in the early 60s.

They are the only B10 school not with an on campus stadium and are in a state whose best high school talent plays hockey.

I doubt if their new coach will be able to do as well as Mason did unless, or course, they hired Ga...ahhh, never mind.

I seem to remember that Minn has plans on the board to build a new on campus stadium.

Also while I'm sure you are right about the hockey talent and the best athletes, there is a school in St. Paul (Crietien-Durham) that has produced a lot of very good football players, we have a couple ot ND. They have a WR named Floyd who is a Jr this year who will be one of the top recruits in the country next year.

The problem for Minnesota is that there just isn't enough talent in the state after it gets raided by Notre Dame and some of the Big Ten schools. They need to find a coach who can defend his home recruiting turf or this pattern of losing seasons will continue.

Our MLB the Soph Laurinaitis kid is a Minny boy as well.....he'd probably would have been a difference maker as a Gopher.

Notre Dame always has lots of Minnesota players. On the current roster I can think of our TE Carlson and our 3rd team All-American OL Harris...

    ........

<t>Mason was an asshat and needed to go.

He scheduled himself into bowl contention year after year. He landed some kids from FL that even most of the FL schools wouldn't/couldn't touch. He was a decent coach, but not a good one.

I guess its all about perspective really. We all see Minnesota as crazy for firing this douchebag exploiter of the handicapped...Maybe they see themselves as having the potential for greatness and he isn't the guy who can take them there?

Minnesota has some GREAT instate talent. They just lose it all.

Notre Dame starts Trevor Laws, John Carlson, Marcus Freeman and Ryan Harris.. All Minnesota boys. I believe Laws is from Burnsville, Carlson is St Cloud and Harris and Freeman are Twin Cities (CDL) kids..

Notre Dame also has future studs like OL Matt Carufel and I believe another athlete that is on the way are Minny boys.

Wisconsin has always done well with Minny kids as has the rest of the Big10...

Toss in the kids who leave for the Florida schools (Chris Weinke etc.) and there is potential there. You just have to believe its possible.</t>
