http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2017/08/texas_republicans_hit_by_hurricane_harvey_voted_ag.html Sympathys for the victims... but none for those GOP lawmakers in Texas snubbing their noses at Sandy victims. Hey... too bad..... take care of your own self I say. We don't have the money so it's all on them... Good luck.... And before you jump on my ass for politicizing this disaster what in hell do you think Cruz and his insensitive GOP cronies were doing?
There is still major repair and replacement work to be done here, both public and private, five years after Sandy. We had one beach town, Normandy Beach, wiped off the map. And this storm in Texas looks like it will be more devastating. I don't know how politicians here will react but I do know that some NJ state troopers are being deployed to Texas this week. My son is on the list for a second deployment.
I see that Dave is still his hateful self. He might as well said: "Screw you Terry O'Keefe. My liberal politics outweigh our friendship."
On another angle.. We have friends that lost their house and cars in the flood of Memorial Day 2015. They had just got everything back in order about 6 months ago. Now the river that cause that flood has crested 5 feet higher than that 2015 flood. There was no federal aid with that flood because there was no hurricane involved, just sustained rain. Drop your partisan politics Dave. When the Democrats controlled congress, Republicans could do nothing because the Democrats towed the party line. The Republicans can't get anything through now because they DON'T tow the party line and vote their conscious so that the majority party does not always win. You owe the people of Texas an apology!
I can only wish the best for all affected by this natural disaster. I cannot think of one time in my life where 30 - 50 inches of rain was ever forecast in any spot in the world. This is going to be a very long recovery process for Texas and I'm positive that even with all the help nobody in their right mind could have predicted this amount of water. And as all things involving people whose job is to step up in disaster situations there will be some kind of political fallout...It would be nice to experience nothing but excellence from govt. institutions whose sole job is to help out in disasters like this. I can tell you from first hand experience the hard times have only begun, not having power, water, toiletries, food and a place to cook and store it for weeks and in this case possibly months is beyond miserable. On a side note both businesses and govt. has gotten better at dealing with this. One example is during our onslaught of hurricanes in Florida years ago we not only lost the necessities of life such as food but we lost communication with the outside world, no landlines or cell phones. Verizon has since stepped up and has private individuals on tap to just run fuel to the power units powering each cell phone tower. I have friends involved in this, pay is $60 per hour, guaranteed 16 hour days, $5000 bonus for showing up and all expenses paid (room, travel, food). HEB grocery based in Texas has 4 mobile food kitchens able to feed 2,500 people an hour and is setting up around the worst affected areas. People are on the move to help out and it's not only govt but corporations that can and will take care of their neighbors..
I have nothing as I say but the deepest sympathy for the people of Texas during this. My venom is directed at those GOP politicians in Texas who were so quick to deny Sandy victims federal aid that was requested and shown to be needed over and above what was offered. My wife would call this karma..... that they now will be in the same predicament.... and can only hope for more generosity and human compassion than they themselves could muster.
What's important now is marshaling all the forces available - and then some - for rescue and for providing food, shelter, and medical care to those displaced by the flooding. This is not the time for slinging darts and arrows across the aisle. It's inevitable, but it must wait until order is restored to every single person, family, and business affected by the storm. George, I wish your son the best if he's deployed, even if he isn't and stays in Jersey to serve and protect. Either way, he's a hero, one of many.
Thanks, Sid. They drive down to Texas in their NJ troop cars, two to a car. They are deputized and do regular patrol work wearing their NJSP uniforms. It will depend on how bad the crime is after the storm finally stops. Looting, breaking and entering and so on. When Sandy hit us we had police here from Texas, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, etc. And they were here for at least a month. My son rode with a trooper form Louisiana and they still stay in touch. I don't know how much worse it would have been without such help from police, rescue, utility companies etc from all over the country. My neighborhood was re-wired by Wisconsin utility company workers. People were ruuning these guys food on the job for weeks. It was something to see. Texas will get a ton of assistance from other states.
I don't know....the devastation and dollar numbers are way past my comprehension of just what is needed. But just to put out the other side; http://legalinsurrection.com/2017/08/fake-news-opposition-to-original-hurricane-sandy-aid-bill-makes-republicans-hypocrites/ Maybe hypocrites are where you choose to find them.
Meanwhile God bless those who give of themselves much to the sacrifice of their families and take care care of those in need.... Texas will do fine and is fairly self supportive of itself... One thing I have witnessed is each community eventually overcomes the tragedy and improves upon its original position.
Read it and I agree with what MCCain said on the subject..... while some of the "pork" added could have merit of their own it was wrong to add that pork into the Sandy relief bill. Not very smart. Can't say as I agree with how that went down either. Then again.... both sides of the aisle are guilty of such pork barrel legislation attempts.... how many bills are pure and have singular purpose... on either side?
