I find it interesting esp in light of Will Muschamp saying he wasn't interested in playing anymore FCS teams at Fla.
I am not sure what you mean Terry. Muschamp wants to quit scheduling the FCS teams meaning that he's interested in scheduling more games with teams like Notre Dame. I am not sure that scheduling all FBS teams will be possible. As a fan I would prefer to not have those weaker teams on my schedule but I see a number crunch if all FBS teams eliminated playing FCS teams. And some of those FCS teams have their biggest paychecks with teams like Florida.
Bill this is from an ESPN article... In the past the reason for scheduling FCS teams was always economics, the Gators couldn't afford to do home/home scheduling and pay for all the stuff that the Ath. Dept had to pay. With all the new money flowing into SEC coffers from TV deals, SEC Network, etc. You'd think the financial pressure to only have home/home with FSU might subside and like Georgia the Gators will be able to schedule some home/home with FBS teams.
"What, he wants to play community colleges or go straight to High School teams".... good one Wendy. Heck.... FCS teams provide the Gators with some of their stiffest competition..... at least under Muschamp they do...... befuddling the Gators so much they block their own players.. Terry, FSU is way more than just a financial arrangement. It's not a throwaway like obviously Tex-Tex A&M was. It's more like Tex-OU.
No I get the importance of the FSU/UF series. And the Gators were hardly the only team in college football who scheduled only home games with patsies for OOC opponents. But there is so much money now in these new TV contracts, that I would think that the financial pressures to schedule home games is less now. Also didn't the SEC stay with 8 conference games and make a rule that you had to schedule at least one game a year with a "Power" Conference opponent?
Florida (FSU), SouCar (Clemson) and Georgia (GaTech) were the only SEC schools who automatically satisfy that requirement. Others do a frequent basis but it hasn't been automatic.
Wait a minute Terry what Muschamp is that he doesn't want to play those type games and wants to schedule more games with the sub division teams, that would lead to home and homes in my opinion. It would be a change in direction with the Gators and one most of us would like.
Yeah in that ESPN article he mentioned that he thought the fanbase would like to stop seeing FCS teams on the schedule.
I guess I am a little confused Terry ad don't quite understand why you find it interesting because of what Muschamp said? I think I misunderstood your comment. Anyhow I hope the Gators can schedule a home and home with Notre Dame one day also.
Only reason I find it interesting is that the Gators always come under criticism for scheduling FCS opponents, reason always given in the past has been that the Gators need the home games, can't afford to give up a home game. Then in 1 week Muschamp says he'd like to stop scheduling FCS opponents and Georgia and Notre Dame start talking about a series and UGA already has Ga.Tech on the schedule so they, like UF, are already in line with the SEC mandate to go out and schedule opponents from the Power 5 (ACC,B12,B10,Pac16,SEC). Muschamp mentioned that the fanbase would like to see some better opponents. That's what Georgia people are saying as well, the UGA AD said his fanbase would be excited to get to South Bend and to have the Irish at Athens. I'm thinking that there is a shift in thinking with regards to scheduling for SEC teams and Muschamp was the one articulating it.
Ah Terry now I understand, I had misinterpreted what you wrote. I think you may well be right. Only a few years ago the Gators had a long waiting list to buy season tickets and a many year string of sellouts. That all changed in a very short period of time and season tickets went begging and our sellout string ended. I don't think the Gators are alone in that regard, MCG gave his season tickets up last year and there is a strong possibility that the 6 tickets we have with our daughters may not be renewed next season. And that is even though both of them have kids at UF. In our case we paid for season tickets and only attended three games last year, with the booster fees involved that is a pretty hefty cost per game. Personally I am not sure moving to 12 games every year was a wise decision, what it brought on was more patsy's on the schedule.
This year....first year w/o season tix since 1990. Went to only two games last year and every game now has tickets for face value around the stadium.
My mistake MCG I should have said after last year. We only went to three home games plus Georgia which of course we pay for separately. The only problem with us doing what you are doing with getting tickets outside the stadium is that there are six of us together and we are not likely to be able to get six together all that often if we buy them like you are going to do. Actually what we do will be largely in the hands of the two daughters. If both of them keep their tickets we will likely keep ours also. But even though both of them have kids there now, and likely will have another each in the near future, one is inclined to keep the tickets and one is not at this point. At 77 years young the drive gets tougher. But hey we are in Kansas City right now and drove here so who knows what happens in the future.
OMG Corey, the topic is indeed about Georgia and Notre Dame but I don't really see the other stuff as off topic because it concerns scheduling and scheduling philosophy. But tell you what I will only say that I wish we could schedule Notre Dame and leave the discussion alone, lots of other things I have to do anyway. But I have to say that in this case I don't understand your gripe.
meh, I purposefully opened that door when I mentioned Muschamp. If I had wanted this to be only about ND/UGA I'd have left that out.
OK Terry, and I will again say that I would like my Gators to schedule Notre Dame for a home and home. Texas would be nice also.
