Fulmer could be charged with gambling

... gambling on keeping his job that is. This report comes from the scrimmage last night:

"I think he played all right. I want to see the tape. There were two or three sacks that we probably shouldn't have taken. We've got to really work hard on our signals and our tempo at the line of scrimmage," coach Phillip Fulmer said of Ainge.

"There are a lot of things to work on by all the positions, but he did make some athletic plays and some really fine throws and for the most part handled the offense, in and out of the huddle and those kind of things pretty well."

The Vols, who open the season Sept. 2 at home against No. 9 California, had seven practices in five days between scrimmages. Tennessee was ranked No. 23 in the preseason AP poll.

Ainge was named the starting quarterback coming out of spring practice after rotating with senior Rick Clausen last season when the Vols finished 5-6. Fulmer and offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe appear dedicated to keeping Ainge in the No. 1 position.

"I still tried to do too much, get a little cute with some checks that got us into trouble a couple of times," Ainge said. "I thought we did a lot better as an offensive team. I thought we took it to them for a while."
