I've never heard of this guy, but the article says he was rated ahead of Reggie Bush coming out of HS and was a prize catch in the '03 recruiting class. JO'Co?

This is one of the reasons that the Trogs and PC have recruited so well every year. ..... room is made for new guys with transfers, flunk outs and the law. Pete can take the max every year. :)

Before I read the story, I had already suspected that it was Whitney Lewis; one of the most overrated players in SoCal history. Some of the so-called "experts" may have said that he was the best coming out of high school, but nobody around here or down in San Diego said that. This was another case of pure-D St. Bonnie's baloney.

St. Bonaventure is the big power up in Ventura County and they always claim that their players are the best. Consider some more current players from there that you ND fans know about: James Bonelli and Terrail Lambert of ND and Lorenzo Booker of Florida State. Have you been wowed by their performances? Me neither. Ventura County has a reputation for being better at selling their players than coaching them.

In that recruiting year, I was screaming right here for the Irish to forget that nonsense and do everything legally possible to land Reggie Bush of San Diego. Unlike Ventura County, San Diego County has a reputation of producing players who are BETTER than the experts think. San Diego had recently produced two Heisman Trophy winners in Rashaad Salaam and Ricky Williams, and the folks down there were saying that this Reggie Bush was even better and faster than those two had been! I believed them. I saw Steve Smith play in high school and he was one of the best I ever saw; a true "can't miss" kind of player with blinding speed and intelligent play. He was another one that ND whiffed on in recruiting...

Both Bush and Smith had an immediate impact on the Trog depth chart. The same cannot be said for Whitney Lewis, who showed up for USC workouts as a WR at 240lbs on a 6'1" frame. Keep in mind that Charlie Weis made Mo Stovall drop 20lbs from his 6'5" frame last season and he's issued similar orders to Chinedum Ndukwe this year and Chinedum is 6'3". Pete Carroll moved Lewis to fullback in the FIRST WEEK of his frosh year for obvious reasons: there is no such thing as a 6'1" 240 WR in the Pac10. Even 220lbs is too much and too slow in a conference full of Olympic sprinters and future arena football scoring freaks...

Lewis was a disappointment from Day#1, but not to me and a lot of other people who follow this. He was never as good as some of the recruitniks said, and was purely a product of Ventura County hype. He's on his proper level now (D1AA) but he's still not a WR...IMHO.

I knew there had to be a story behind the story. Thanks, JO'Co.
