Geeeez doesn't congress have more important things to do, I mean once they socialize america won't the next goal be to make sure all teams go 6-6?
I yawn at the mammoth 162 game MLB schedule as an extreme example of why college football is so damned exciting in comparison. This past Saturday in Gainesville in the 4th Qtr it was absolutely do or die in the "BCS" playoffs. Institute real playoffs and you get mulligans introduced to the game and last Saturday's nail biter becomes much less interesting with much less at stake in the outcome. With playoffs these kinds of mid-season games against non-rivals will not even be sell-outs any longer.
These d*ckholes can't tie their shoes without checking the polls first. Still, if the BCS is tossed for a 16 team playoff, I am all for it. BCS backers can cry all they want, but they brought this on themselves. Ala the Civil Rights battles of the 50s and 60s, I am sure this will also have some hang over effect that does more harm than good in the name of a greater good... but just like that situation, they brought it on themselves. All they had to do was the right thing. Instead they laughed at you while they took your money and justified their cackles with 'look at all the press we're getting.' This blows.
[quoute]This past Saturday in Gainesville in the 4th Qtr it was absolutely do or die in the "BCS" playoffs. [/quote] Bullsh*t.. and that's ******** with a capital BULLLLLLSH*t Florida lost in the 4th week of the season last year. Was that "absolutely do or die in the "BCS" playoffs" ?? The answer is no... You lost right about this time last year and it didn't hurt you at all. Your last NC got a mulligan in the 7th week of the season. Your NC team before that got a mulligan in the 11th week of the season. LSU got mulligans in the 7th and 12th weeks of the season.. That's right, they lost the game BEFORE the conference title game but still played for it all. Losing is only do or die if you aren't on the list of cool kids. Since 1991, there have been 18 (19 actually due to USC/LSU split) National Champions Of those, all of them have been unbeaten except 6 teams. 4 of those 6 teams are SEC teams. Florida State (another beloved Southern power was one of the others). To recap those years: -Florida State (they finished with 1 loss tied with Notre Dame who BEAT Florida State). This was suppose to be a retirement/life time achievement gift for Bowden.. here is is still begging for wins he doesn't deserve all these years later. -Florida (finished with 1 loss. There were 3 teams with identical records at the end of the year to Florida and one of them was unbeaten.) -LSU/USC: The year that broke the AP poll apart from the BCS. These two may well have been the best 2 in the country but they didn't get to play as the system kept USC out. -Florida (3 teams finished the year with records equal to Florida, one team finished unbeaten) -LSU (7 teams that year had records equal to or better than LSU) -Florida (4 teams with equal to and 1 better aka undefeated) records than Florida that year. Don't talk to me about your 'murderous playoff run'... it's crap.
Bill, LOL.. nah, I'd just wind up giving my money to some roads project in reality. I do wish them luck though.
What a ludicrous statement. Consider that only 13% of eligible teams will MAKE the playoff. Yeah... now we can toss out the records... In this scenario you MIGHT see a 2 loss team in the playoff, but that would almost surely be a bottom seed, and even then would probably be a conference runner-up at worst. The games will be every bit as important.
Gee Corey let me see where to start. The mulligans only happen if other teams lose. For LSU to make it to the game with Ohio State several teams had to lose and several other teams that would have had one loss seasons had to lose, West Virginia at the top of the list. When the Gators made the games in 2006 and 2008 again there were not two unbeaten teams, in fact last year none except using your words uncool Utah which would have been easily handled by either Florida or Oklahoma. USC has come out on the short end because the computers keep leaving them out. Two of the three times the Gators have won their National Championships they beat an unbeaten team. You look at that as a knock at the Gators or SEC, I look at it as some data that the SEC puts out competitive teams.
I pretty much agree Scott. As far as do or die though, I think at this point in the season you have to look at it as do or die because there is no guarantee that a one loss team does make it to the championship game. In fact there is every possibility that this year that could be true. Cinn., Boise State and Iowa are all threats to go unbeaten.
Bill, Sure. In this system that's true. The beauty of a playoff is that the "best" team is almost guaranteed NOT to be left out. Boise would get their shot, so would Cincinnati and Iowa. No more complaints... except about who was in the last 2 or three slots, but I can sure live with that compared to what we have now.
It is this concept that makes every single regular season game in the present BCS system a "playoff" game. Sure....you may get a second chance....maybe.....but sometimes you lose one and you're done ( just ask USC right Corey? ) or ask Texas last year. Even if you can get in with one loss with a little luck there goes your one and only mulligan with a loss so why waste em? The case of two loss LSU getting in took a lot of highly improbable events and likely will not be repeated in my opinion. So...when I say the Ark-Fla game felt like a playoff game at the end when UF stood a chance of losing I am being factual because it does leave open the very real possibility you could get left out.
Bill, You realize that Scott and I are saying essentially the same thing here. You agree with Scott, but not I. The difference is how we choose to send the message. The reason I individually call out Florida and LSU is to specifically refute Dave's statement that 'every week is a playoff' in this current BCS structure. The fact of the matter is.. it may well be a single game elimination for everyone, but not the SEC. This year, the media (who are doing the BCS' dirty work for them btw) started championing the cause of a 1 or 2 loss SEC team in the title game after week 1 this year. It's laughable. Dave, You 'may or may not' get a 2nd chance is based upon WHO you are and not WHAT you are. That is a big, big problem. If you can't see how wrong it is that teams have to prove themselves consistently worthy of NC consideration over a 10 to 15 year period.. just to even be considered.. then we'll never agree on this issue.
Corey this statement is why we will continue to disagree. There may be a handful of candidates every year for the top two spots and yes 2 or 3 teams have to be left out usually who would have been able to compete but still there is selection criteria other than "who" you are. We went over many times why Utah based on results before the bowl games was left out over Florida and every year there is an example of that it seems. I would be willing to bet huge that if Bama had played Utah for the national title they would have spanked the Utes and that is my true opinion. I think "what" you have done is still paramount to "who" you are with regard to the selection process as it has been for the past 4 or 5 years since the Nebraska debacle in the Rose Bowl and because of that lousy pairing with Miami, Texas was unable to get in last year because they were not Big 12 Champions.....which seems right to me. The process ain't perfect and some will get left out annually that feel they should have been in. I'm sure Fla will take a seat in the bridesmaid's chair one day and I won't like it a bit. Me personally I would rather see a Plus-one format after the bowls.
I would agree that you send the message different. So different in fact that I didn't read your thoughts as agreeing with Scott.
Bill/Dave- The people who bitch about this the most are those who stand to gain the least from opening up the gates. That's a fact. I also dearly love all the speculation about how Bama would spank Utah if they played again, or if they played for the title...or if they played for the honor of the dear ole south.. It's ********. They got beat, leave with it. Look no further than this year's BYU team. They beat the **** out of Oklahoma, but turned around and got drop kicked by a very up and down FSU team. The signs are everywhere but you guys refuse to admit they are true. No one is saying these guys are always better than you or other top flight BCS foes.. What we are saying is that they are every bit as good.. and if that is the case, they deserve the right to play for it all. Dave, You moreso than anyone just live in this fantasy land of make believe 'what if' matchups and rematches that somehow trump all action that takes place on the field. There's always an excuse. Always a black helicopter. Always a reason that the best football is played in the SEC and everyone on Florida's schedule is 2nd. The facts don't bear it out..but rather than come to gripes with the fact that you're catching a break under this current system, you deflect and laugh at people...
Call it unrealistic if you must Corey but I firmly believe that college football more so than pro football is a game of motivation and momentum and my thoughts are Bama had neither when they played Utah and Utah had a lot of both. Maybe that doesn't seem feasible to you for some reason but it does to me. I watched Utah struggle mightily and almost lose to the worst Michigan team I have ever seen in my college football watching days....and that left me with a distinct impression about the Utes that they were good.....but not overwhelming.
And you're looking at the micro while applying it to the macro. I saw your Gators last year struggle (lose) with an Ole Miss team that was beaten by Vandy and Wake Forest, should I deduce that you were no better than the 5th place team in the ACC?
Corey, I don't know who you are referring to about bitching the most. I hope not me, I'm not bitching. I'm going living with whatever system we have and rooting for my Gators to succeed. Right now that is the BCS, if your point of view ever prevails then I'll root for them in that system. I just choose to be happy and leave the crusading to others.
