Well....he writes for College Football News and the Heisman was just announced. With nothing else better to do it must have sounded like a relevant thing for him to write about.
Oh well I guess that if somebody actually thinks they can name who was the greatest college football player of all-time, then somebody can write up a list of the best Heismans.
So Andre Ware is ranked before any of ND's Heisman winners!!! Getting to see him try to play pro ball here in Detroit, I know full well what a complete lack of talent he had. He was completely unable to throw a swing pass 5 yds. with any touch at all. Hey KP, this is another media guy that just loves ND.
Ware had gaudy college stats but I tend to agree with you about his skills.....no touch on some of his throws for sure. Of course when nasty NFL D-linemen are always breathing down your neck because of zero protection it's probably hard as hell to keep from launching the ball with all your might.
Ware was followed at Houston by David Klingler (I think) and as I recall he broke all of Ware's records playing the same pass happy system against the same weak opponents. It's no wonder he didn't make it in Cincy either. Ware was the Colt Brennen of his day with a lot less talent.
these are meaningless <t>they are meant to do nothing but stir internet board debate.<br/> <br/> you can't quantify this fairly. you simply cannot.</t>
Ha hey Gip, I would argue with you except that Alabama, being the media darling that we are, has never had a Heisman Trophy winner.
I never knew Alabama had never had a Heisman winner. They certainly have had a lot of players that are Heisman quality it would seem.. Surprising.
Surprising, except that one of the things that makes a great coach great is the ability to win championships with good, but not great, players. Bear accomplished a hell of a lot more with no Heisman winners than many schools with multiple winners. ~Matt
I would submit <t>that Bear had lots of great players.<br/> <br/> They just didn't win the Heisman</t>
Back in the day of 90 plus players on the roster you can bet that Bear had third stringers that would have been AA at lesser programs.
Yeah, in the 60's Trammel, Namath, Stabler probably could have made it and in the 70's Coach Bryant would rotate 4 and 5 running backs throughout a game so none had flashy stats. The NC's offset the lack of Heisman's. Prothro may have had a shot if he hadn't gotten hurt.
