North Dakota State beat Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas last night? I remember when I was at UMD, the North Dakota schools and a few others declared their intention to go DI in the next 5 years. Don't sleep on the Bison.
Watched the whole NDS game, I agree that they require attention and had excellent coaching, they were impressive...Go Bison... Missed the Oregon St game but kept watching the ticker of it going back and forth...At the moment I have to say that both Ga and Clemson seem to be the most prepared teams going into week one. I have to comment once again that pre-season rankings are fruitless and there should be no rankings until Oct. 15
That is 4 FCS wins in a row for NDS as they beat Minnesota, Kansas, and Colorado State in prior seasons. Hopefully, Appy State will not make in 2 in a row when they visit Ann Arbor next year.
   :!: :!: :!: I watched the Eastern Washington/Oregon State game this morning and it was no fluke. The Beavers couldn't stop the EWU offense. It was as simple as that. I've never heard of most of their players, so we can assume there must be some very good coaches/recruiters there. A quick look at the EWU roster shows two elements that stand out: 1. Two transfers from 12Pac schools; one from Wazzoo and the other is Tevin McDonald from UCLA... 2. They recruit in all the right places, so they know what they're doing. Nearly every player is from Washington or California, with a heavy emphasis on Catholic school players (Bishop Amat, Bishop O'Dowd, Jesuit, Gonzaga Prep etc.) and city kids from places like Pasadena, L.A. Harbor, Long Beach, Carson, Compton etc.). Whoever these guys are, they're not a fluke and they're not an accident... http://www.goeags.com/sports/m-footbl/2013-14/roster Tevin McDonald http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/college-football/story/_/id/9100952/tevin-mcdonald-dismissed-ucla-bruins-rules-violation
That App St upset of 5th ranked Michigan was still one of the most exciting radio calls I have ever heard..... an unbelievable upset it was. Next year? Appy gets moidered.
W.Kentucky welcomed Big Game Mike Stoops by beating Kentucky Both Iowa and Iowa State lost to lower schools as well.
There's some of these FCS schools that don't want to stay FCS. There's a few DIIs that want to make the jump that North Dakota State, North Dakota etc made.. The only downside I see in this, is that some of the FCS and DII programs are taking kids who probably should be weightlifting in jail, instead of in the team weightroom. When Terry Bowden was at UNA, the crime, violent crime and rape stats in the community jumped...and that's just the stuff he couldn't bury.
Wyoming almost always gives people fits. I know that I like to bust Dave's balls over his SEC conspiracy theories, but if there is one that holds true..or may be true, it's that Auburn gets some real generous calls down on the Plains.
haha! I'm not saying the conspiracy theory behind it is valid.. there's no 'Birmingham mafia' organizing the fix of the officials.. although now that I think about that element, I guess that's possible! haha But I've been watching Auburn closely for 17 years now. There's no team in America that gets more phantom calls in their favor, or more weird rulings that go their way than Auburn does at home. In their game against Wazzu, they had a kick return for a TD in which the kid took 2 full strides on the line. (You could see the paint kick up on each stride). A key catch out of bounds ruled in. A no catch called a catch. Weird personal fouls and no calls. If it's just bad officiating, that's one thing. But that means the other team would get bad calls too, and that's just not the case. Weird things happen down on the Plains.
8) :!: re: Auburn Auburn was completely out-played by Wazzoo. The Cougs had 28 first downs to Auburn's 16. It was ridiculous. Even the broadcasters pointed out that the kick returner stepped out twice only to have the replay official rule that the ruling was confirmed that he had not stepped out at all. Without that call, Auburn falls at home... http://espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=332430002 re: Eastern Washington The Eagles really have my attention now. Oregon State finished last year with the second best defense in the 12Pac and they were road kill in their opener. Here's a player you should know about. He lives in Pasadena and played at Alemany...a Catholic school in the San Fernando Valley that used to be in our league here. The problem with Auburn I have always believed is that most of the officiating crew and definitely the replay official have a look like they reside locally and they just don't give a crap or care if anyone objects to their lack of objectivity. Check out these comments from Arkansas a couple of years back: http://www.secsportsfan.com/terrible-officiating-in-auburn-arkansas-game.html "A wise ol’ coach with an Arkansas connection, when asked a while back what he thought of Arkansas’ chances of ever succeeding in the SEC, said, “You’ve got to realize, those 10 teams have been in this league 70-something years. They’re like a fraternity, a club. That’s always going to be a problem for Arkansas, who’s only been in it since 1992.” " I do think when Arkansas plays Florida that it's the Hogs on the outside of the refs looking in but when UF plays at places like at Auburn and maybe one or two others...... those old school SEC school's connections have me seeing those black helicopters..... and enough weird calls/non-calls have happened over the years to keep me feeling that way. However, I think UF these days has elevated up the ladder a few rungs in the SEC and carries some clout of it's own and I would venture that probably at Auburn on the plains is the most likely spot to get hosed.....more than any other. Bama?..... the Crimson Tide is just too damned proud to not want it fair and square.... and I do truly believe that whereas Auburn will take it anyway they can get it.
I don't agree. I see SEC refs as wanting to be the story too much but favoring one team above another. I just don't agree. :?
Well I remember A&M's last trip to Auburn... Wasn't much the refs could do to stop that curb-stomping. 8) I've found the SEC refs to be a breath of fresh air after the sorry bastards that roam the sidelines in the Little XII.
Kp I think the newer generation of refs are much more cognizant and aware of the media scrutiny that rains down upon their on field calls and they probably try to get it right more often than not. It's those older guys....the ones not quite yet retired who still harbor those long held prejudices and subjectivity about one team or the other and sometimes they seem oblivious to any media and fan criticisms their bias/ineptitude might bring down on their decisions. I saw a similar thing in Detroit teamsters at Cobo Hall in Detroit. The old school guys back in the 90s were used to the old Jimmy Hoffa way of doing things..... and they could be very threatening and menacing and generally not really caring too much what anyone thought of the job they were doing. The younger generation came in and finally over time began to take over the hall and really were much more in tune with how important their productivity was viewed and how that affected their public image.
The last time Wyoming came to Lincoln and played the Huskers tough, we played for the National Championship 3 months later....that won't happen this year though. Nebraska 42 Wyoming 32 Oct. 1, 1994 Lincoln, NE Wyoming 14 7 3 8 - 32 Nebraska 0 14 21 7 - 42
