I'm worried how gipper will get his news!! Seriously though newspapers are cratering all over the country as more and more people get their news either online or via cable/satelite news services. I think the younger generation doesn't even read the newspaper anymore. I still get it at home and look forward to the sports section, the funnies and then the rest of the paper if I have time. As an employer I no longer advertise in the paper when I'm looking for a new employee, the internet is much more efficient and cost effective. I saw where even the NYTimes is in trouble. I wonder how long before all newspapers just stop existing as a paper and go to online only. I had an uncle who was a printer for the Detroit Free Press back in the day. My mom said he was always covered in ink and smelled funny. Of course that type of printing is long gone. Detroit Papers stop delivery
Terry The Detroit newspapers have been an embarassment for some time. They are little more than AP and UPI outlets with little original content. Compared to papers in cities like Indy, Chicago and Columbus they are really lame. But what you are seeing is probably just an early chapter in what will be a very serious economic disaster to this part of the country. Advertising the lifeblood of the newspaper industry is already down here. Our real estate industry is cratered. The Detroit school system is bankrupt and the state has to borrow to pay the unemployment benefits it has to pay. The economic devastation is as significant as a natural disaster. Nice to see the federal government helping folks in this part of the country who need help like they do for folks in Ala. and Tex after another hurricane hits.
1. I believe everyone involved in the bailout process has compromised their position with the exception of the Union. Once again, they hold the gun to America's head while someone else takes the blame. 2. The newspaper industry has been dying since the rise of the Internet... they just didn't know it yet. Business models, like life forms, must adapt, or become extinct. Newspapers have refused to adapt. They carry old school principles and practices into a generation that just laughs at those notions.
I think I would like to have a celebration the day the New York Times goes under.
Bill, Although I understand the intent of your post, another American company going under and more jobs lost is a travesty. I sit here tonight in great sadness because of people that I am very close to learned today that they have until Jan-5 to accept a "voluntary" separation package that has been offered to them. They all realize that they are more than likely going to be involved in a RIF if they do not accept. We are down to letting good people go. There are no slackers that deserve to be let go. Please excuse any post I make tonight as there will be alcohol involved. Those that are leaving our office... I salute you and wish you nothing but the best. It will be difficult for you to find positions like you had in this economy but stay true to yourself and know that any company out there would be lucky to have you.
I feel for your friends Tom, a lot of good people are going to be looking for new jobs in the comming months. I just hope that the new year will bring good news and that we will start to recover lost jobs.
I was laid off last Thurs. the 11th. First time out of work in 22 years....all of which spent with the company that laid me off. I will be very hard pressed to ever duplicate the job I had so it has been a very difficult time for myself and my family. Those that summarily dismiss just how hard it is....especially in these Depression like times need to feel a little of the same pain in my opinion. ( that goes for you Mr. Corker and Mr. Shelby.....and your supporters ) Only thing is....I am cheering like hell for everybody still employed because their success is the only hope I've got of returning to a normal life. I am not sure it's going to be here in Michigan however....if there is any possible way to sell my house in a few months. I bought it in 1992 and I am worried about making any equity on it. Unbelievable......Merry Christmas.
Point well taken Tom. My son has been out of a job for several months now and what you are describing at your company is the way I left my job in 93. For me it turned out to be a blessing but I do know what you are saying. But I also have to admit that the bias of the NYT bothers me a lot. Good luck to your friends.
Sorry to hear about the job situation Dave. It is very rough out there and the current situation scares the heck out of me... I'm certain that phase is already over for you.
Dave, we were posting at the same time and I just now saw your post. I wish you well, there is no question that this is a tough time for a lot of folks like you, my son and those friends of Tom. I wish you and all of them well and will have to retract my position on the NYT as that would just add to the proble,. Good luck in your job search. Are you thinking of moving back to Florida?
Have lived here since Dec. 1978 and yes.....I am seriously considering relocating back to Florida. That's all predicated on finding a decent job and selling my house.
Dave, I too am sorry for your troubles. I'll spare all the details of any 'woe is me' type post, but I do understand your position. Feel free to email me anytime if you need anything.
Dave, I have a place in Martin County ( east coast ) and I can tell you from my recent stay that economic conditions in that area are much worse than in NJ and that's saying a lot, Check Florida out very carefully before making a move of that magnitude.
Dave, Sorry to hear about your circumstances. You might look into the Texas job market. While the downturn in the economy has hit us as well, but not as hard as Michigan. I hope the new year brings some good news for you and the family. Terry
Thanks for the kind words to all of you. George...I have heard the Fla real estate market is very down right now but my hope is that some commercial areas like Tampa, Orlando and Jax do have some opportunity for jobs and need salespeople. I am just starting out and Christmas/New Years will delay my job search but in Jan. I will attack it. Any helpful hints are appreciated. Thanks again.
Dave, News like this makes all the other "stuff" irrelevent. I am sorry for your situation. I hope you can take the steps necessary to put things in order and rebound from this unfortunate situation. If I can think of anything constructive I will communicate it to you.
Dave Sorry to hear that you are one of the early casualties. I know what you mean about trying to sell your house. Between forclosures, people trying to relocate for employment and retirees wishing to move to retirement locations, the market is way oversaturated. And this is just the early dominoes. It's going to impact tens of millions Americans. Oh well, at least they stuck it to the UAW so it's all worth it.
That's right Gipper.....those 4 or 5 senators from Japanese laden states were able to impact the entire process and in effect render the efforts of the majority to be futile. What has impacted my situation the most is the frozen credit markets which have created the severity of the crisis. The Big Three was already in a dicey spot no doubt and cuts have been in the works even before the financial meltdown but the resultant downward spiral after Wall Street's collapse has really put the Big Three in turmoil and therefore expedited my joblessness. A nice bail out weeks ago may have saved me....or at least prolonged my agony. I'll never know which.
Yes, let's blame 4 or 5 Senators.................... I'm sure that is where the blame lies here. Like I said, everyone compromised but one entity and once again, they are the ones escaping any blame.
