You wonder what event will signal "rock bottom" these days. Will we have a sign that we have finally, as a nation and society, sunk as low as we can go. Will it be a clear cut sign, an event of enormous proportion and significance or something rather inane yet startling in it exposure and reaction. Which bring us to that bucket of pus, Dave Letterman. He announces pre emptively that he has been having sex with female employees of his show. He admits to doing creepy things and of being blackmailed as a result. Does the audience gasp? Is there eerie silence? Do people walk out in disgust? Nope. They laugh. Then they applaud. He even begins to joke about it. This is the same liberal slug who has turned a late night comedy talk show into a political forum, attacking Bush relentlessly and then Sarah Palin, even joking that her 13 year old daughter was having sex with Alex Rodriguez at a Yankee game. Every day, in a new way, we seem to reach further in to the depths. Two days ago I would have told that the spectacle of Hollywood stars coming out in support of Roman Polanski, child rapist, might have signified bottom. I was wrong. And I'll probably be wrong about Letterman as well.
I'd say that 'Hollywood' is no different than NYC. In fact, in my life I've seen a merger of the entertainment community. There use to be 'Hollywood' celebritards.. but there were also the more respected and artistic New York performers.. but this hybrid Celebritard community seems to be border-less. It's everywhere. In everyone's rush to gain perspective they have lost all sense of ethical standard. As I was bitching about in a sports related forum.. we don't expect more of ourselves.. We excuse our own behavior. We all contribute in one way or another.
Will Letterman now become the butt/punchline for other commedians and take the place of Clinton, John Edwards, etc, or is there professional courtesy. Will he himself be able to do this type of humour ever again? Personally I've always thought he was a douchebag.
