No Heisman hangover now for sure: By MARK SNYDER FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER U-M linebacker Shawn Crable provided the first bulletin board material for the Capital One Bowl when he was asked about Florida QB and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. “I think y’all are too concerned with this Tebow, I mean he’s just a quarterback,” Crable said Saturday. “He’s really not (different.) He’s got some freakish stats because they use him differently, they use him in the red zone a lot to run the ball but he’s nothing more exceptional than we’ve ever played against. “If you ask me about (Oregon’s) Dennis Dixon or you ask me about (former Texas quarterback) Vince Young, I’d be like, now those are some freakish people. You ask me about this guy, he’s just a quarterback.” 8)
Obviously Crable doesn't know about Geno Hayes and his remarks...eh Bill. Anyway...how's your leg coming along? Mine seems to be getting better lately as I have chucked the leg brace ( was going to 90 degrees of flex anyway ). The doc hasn't seen it yet to give me that clearance but I get around better w/o the brace even though it is still pretty gimpy at times. Other times it feels pretty decent so as long as I am careful and don't get a setback I am better off braceless. I hope rehabbing will get rid of some of the stiffness the knee still has.
I'm doing fine MCG, a long time until I can do any rehab though. Man you take it easy, from what my doctor told me there's about a 10% chance of re-injury, I sure don't want that. I also heard of someone who had this injury and wasn't careful enough and sure enough re-injured it twice and was 8 months before he was back on his feet. So don't overdue!
Bill, I walk about as gingerly as I can and still ambulate. I did just this week start using escalators instead of elevators so every week is a small step. I do plan to be extremely careful.....especially when it's icy. Thankfully I have not been a snow skier in the last few years etc etc. Golf is about as active as I get on my leg so hopefully I can do that unimpeded this coming summer although I will not plan on traversing extreme hills and/or ditches, etc.
I'm getting there George....thanks. Bill has a ways to go....especially with that full cast he is sporting right now. He'll get there too......he's got the right attitude.
Bill, Crable is far from my favorite player - an Ohio boy that went to the dark side - but in fairness he has had the distinct unpleasantness of having had to defend both Dixon and VY and while Tebow is a fine, fine player he is nowhere near the threat running the ball that those other two kids are....Dixon and VY could take the ball to the house from anywhere on the field. Tebow is much more of a power, redzone threat.....what did he average 4yds/carry -v- Dixon and VY who were probably closer to 6-7 yards a carry and had TD runs of 80 yards or so.... In truth he is probably better served keeping his piehole shut, but I would expect most LBers would agree with him.....
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/stats?playerId=135107 http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/stats?playerId=183484 Comparing passer stats and ratings VY was comparable to TB in his Heisman year 2005. Vince only rushed for 12 TDs to Tebow's 22 but VY's per carry average was 6.8 compared to TB's 4.3. Texas had 4 rushers other than VY account for over 2300 yards rushing. http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.com/000_stats/05/teamcume.htm#TEAM.IND By contrast UF's next 4 rushers accounted for only 1400 yards in 2007. The evidence shows that Tebow was the go to guy running the football for UF and that means on tough 3rd and 2 he would get the call for a three yard run and a 1st down. I doubt VY's number was called much in those circumstances because Texas had a running game. I doubt Crable truly realizes that Tebow is the guy who gets that call and that he...Crable...gets to find out just what kind of runner Tebow is when that happens. But he will.....
I've no doubt that after having watched hour upon hour of film that Crable is much aware that Tebow is a tough, hardnosed physical runner. I don't think that is what he was saying at all....my interpretation was not that Tebow wasn't a strong runner, but that he is not the kind of runner that you fear breaking open a game and taking it to the house from anywhere on the field like VY and Dixon could and did..... VY is every bit as big and strong as Tebow, he just has an extra dimension that Tebow does not - breakaway speed. Mack had other effective options available to him in short yardage situations and didn't need to see his QB get hammered unnecessarily......
Anybody who would compare VY as an athletic QB to Tim Tebow just doesn't understand football. Tim is a great college QB, Vince was just on a different level in terms of athletic talent. Crable though would have been better suited not to give the Gators and Tebow reason to be fired up. Tim is certainly capable of running over his ass on the goal line!!
And that I am certain will happen Terry...... I agree that Crable probably meant it more like BT says but of course it doesn't come out that way....and I am glad it didn't.....
Crable has a big yap and this is not the first time he has put it to use....no doubt he would have been better served keeping his shut. As it relates to a collision at the goal line, Crable is a pretty good football player in his own right, brings a load and my sense is that he is looking forward to the prospect...Tebow would not be the first quarterback that he's laid out. I'm thinking the Gators would be better served keeping young Tebow away from Crable rather than towards him....but without a better alternative at RB, the Tebow-Crable collisions should occur early and often.
Well it does make he game more compelling to watch, if for no other reason than to see who wins in the Tebow vs Crable matchup!! Was Crable part of the UM defense that Vince ran over and around in the Rose Bowl???
I remember that Rose Bowl....great game. As I recall, both defenses played a dominant role in the outcome.......although perhaps not what they had intended. The Stripeheads are still trying to tackle VY while your Longdoggies have not laid a glove on Breaston yet
Yeah...we're still a bad pass defense!! But I think it was Braylon Edwards who you are talking about.
Buckeye T, I would be interested in the running stats without sacks being a part of the equation. Since in college football sacks count against rushing yardage. I believe that when he runs Tebow's average would be much higher than 4.3. Also when it comes to defending against a QB his overall ability to run and pass. I'm not accepting that the two guys he mentioned are far above Tebow and his ability. All three of those guys are a load to defend against but I hardly think the classification that Tebow is just a QB as compared to those others is accurate. However I hope he goes into the game Tuesday believing just that, it will work in the Gators favor. I didn't have the privilege to watch Dixon and Young on a regular basis. What I believe is that any one of the three is a load to defend against.
