Sid sent me a Sporting News article on PAC10 Expansion. They are apparently seriously considering expansion. I assume that they will add 2 of Utah, BYU or Boise. Somebody on another board posted that rumours were flying that Utah and Boise were the ones. To me that's suprising given the Pac10's historical alignments. USC/UCLA Az/ASU Oregon/OSU Wash/Wazzu Stanford/CAL So Utah/BYU would seem to be the logical move. With Boise State and Nevada moving from the WAC to the Mtn West. I've also heard some place that the B10 and Pitt are very close to a deal. Pac10 Expansion
So it seems the Pac 10 and Big 10 are getting close to a playoff. The Big 10 now has 11 teams. If they add one then they will have 12. They probably need to change their name. However the Big 12 is taken. Perhaps the could call them Selves the Big 10 plus 2??
I would think that the Big 10 could have 20 teams in the conference, and it would always be recognized as the Big 10.....albeit the butt of never-ending humor about the conference name vs. the number of members.
No question in my mind about the Big Ten expanding and not just adding one new college or university. Any expansion this go around will be multiple schools. Pitt and Syracuse are likely candiates. Don
Here are some additional thoughts (Read First Down and Second Down) from a couple of Sporting News writers: Thoughts about Pac10 Expansion Possibilities If anyone has problems with the link, let me know. I might have found a way to link pages from my daily .pdf-formatted Sporting News publication. I have to click on the "print" icon, which brings up a web page for printing. Then I cancel out the print feature. I'm curious how it shows up on other computers.
Interesting, it does work Sid but it also brings up the printer dialogue box which of course you just cancel and read the article. Don, why do you think the B10 will expand with mulitiple teams? 12 teams seems to be the best configuration giving you 2 divisions and a championship game while lallowing conference members to still have a decent number of non-conference games.
Oh Baby! Big Ass Pecan Pie may be coming to the Big Ten!!! http://detroitnews.com/article/20100211/SPORTS0203/2110451/Report--Texas--Big-Ten-have--preliminary-exchanges--about-expansion
If they did actually do that, it would rock the football world. But while no doubt there are financial incentives to Texas joining the B10, specifically the B10 TV contract is much bigger than the B12. Texas is leading the football world currently in revenue generation, so I question how much money is a factor. But I would think additional travel would be a consideration for non-football sports, baseball is huge at Texas not so much in the B10 I can't see Texas baseball in the B10. Academically Texas is an excellent match for the B10 schools though. Also I wonder if Texas football would be happy having to play two significant non-conf games every year as they wouldn't be able to drop either OU or Texas A&M. It would also be interesting to see how it affected recruiting. ...say here boy dew yew really want to play in the snow up in Michigan or Ohiah?
Seriously, I would be stunned if Texas joined the B10. The rivalires that the Longhorns have with the teams in the Big 12 South are longstanding and I supect the alums would be in revolt over the thought of joining the B10. As a B10 fan, Texas would be my first choice regarding expansion and I agree with you that from an academic standpoint, Texas would be a great fit. But, I have a hard time seeing Texas walking away from the B12 unless another B12 school(s) jumped with Texas to the B10.
I saw that report a little while ago and found it amusing, but doubt there's much to it in the end...
Glad I checked in here first, I read that article about Texas and was going to make a topic. I have serious doubts that could happen, but it makes interesting reading.
The guys on the Aggie sites are kicking the expansion topic around, and while very unlikely, the A&M and Texas to the PAC move has me intrigued. It's a long way for us to travel for just about everything, but at least the trips would be interesting! I wonder if this will be a small little adjustment (Pitt joins Big10, BYU and Boise to PAC) or if it will be a big realignment like when the Big 12 was formed???
