Well it's a start, I think everybody wants the one and done rule to be DONE except the NBA Players Association which has shown no interest in making that change. Unless they can get the NBAPA onboard with fixing the problem then it's all going to be for naught. I'm not sure what the NCAA creating a certification program for agents will do, agents are currently working behind the scenes secretively and if there is a program I do wonder if they will suddenly embrace legitimization and follow the rules. The kids and their parents are equally at fault with this whole mess, the parents are greedy and many no doubt see their kids as their ticket to the good life. As long as there are greedy parents with their hands out, there will be people/agents/apparel companies willing to break rules to get an advantage to their future superstar kid. So bottom line I'm glad they have made some recommendations and hopefully they will be implemented as first steps to getting things under controll. I do think the lifetime ban will make coaches think twice and the 5 year ban for schools caught will also be a powerful statement. It's close to but not quite the same as the death penalty that SMU got in football, but 5 years of no tourney will certainly come close to killing the program as far as recruiting top players. The article mentioned Syracuse getting a 1 year ban which would be a 5 year ban if the new rules are implemented. Boeheim would have probably retired if he'd been given a 5 year ban.
It's a start, but only time will tell how this all sorts out. I do like the fact that college players not drafter will be permitted to return to their college team.
Fr. Jenkins didn't have much to say specifically, but he did say this.. https://news.nd.edu/news/father-jenkins-reacts-to-ncaa-basketball-commission-report/
:!: I'm not optimistic. The genie has been out of the bottle for decades. There are many HIGH SCHOOLS that play a national schedule and have sponsorship deals with large corporations. These intensions are great here, but BIG money is involved...
Remember the good old days when freshmen played on the freshmen team and then stayed together for three years building a TEAM. How great was Pete Maravich? Scored all those points in three seasons. Averaged 44.7 for his career with no three point shot.
