How do you stand on the 18th tee, with a 3 shot lead and only need double bogey to win and then hit a gargantuan drive into a perfect position, make the smart play and lay up to a perfect spot and be all set to knock it on a 2 put to a victory. Instead you dump hit a shot that is low and has so much spin that it backs up off the green and into the lake, then hit the next one up on the upper level a long way from the hole with a treacherous downhill putt but still if you get down in 2 you win. Oh and to make you feel better your playing partner who is out of it drains one on your line from further away. ...so you 3 putt and they have to get the #2 guy out of his car in the parking lot for a playoff (exageration). Then on the 2nd hole you 3 putt again to go home a loser, not just blowing a 3 shot lead all on one hole but a 6 shot lead on the back nine. Kyle Stanley needs a trip to Columbus Neb to get his head right after that! BTW the most amazing hole I saw played this weekend was on Sunday by Bill Haas, he was facing a 606 yd par 5 #9, Drives about half way there but in the first cut of the rough...what would Huskerman do? Well hell get out the big stick again and hit the driver not just off the deck but out of the rough to 3 feet and eagle!! Maybe better than that wedge out of the lake to win the Fedex.
Re: Haas Here's a guy I like. Knows what the score is at the time he makes his choice, but bases it on the percentages of the shot. Great choice to nuke that driver off the deck....of course you have to practice it.
Re: The Caddie You could hear the guy change his players choice of clubs when he says, no, we're not gonna do that again. and hands him a different club. Way to go asshole. You only needed to do that on his 3rd shot BEFORE he dumped it in the water. The guy that pays your bills just had a shitload of doubt dumped into his grape at that very moment. Guide him on the shot choice, not the club. If your so friggin' good, the nationwide tour would still be your employer.
Meanwhile over in Abba Dabba Dubai...El Tigre has a pretty good week except for the 72 on Sunday. Old Tiger never would have given up the Sunday lead, well almost never. Still think he's never going to be that old Tiger and I'd be surprised if he won a Major this year. Guys like McIlroy fear him not.
Well it's happening again. Spencer Levin is falling apart in the Desert and guess who's walking over him....Kyle Stanley.
There were a couple of shots that he needed me on, some of those pins where they were close to the false front and he kept spinning them off the green....my shot never would have done that...always hits and runs forward.
He wouldn't need me... All my shots that land short of the pin stop or spin back. All the ones that land behind the pin bounce like flubber.
Tiger Woods has been in he ear of the USGA and the R&A about the long putter. Tiger believes the putter should be no longer than the shortest club in your bag. So many of these young guys are using a long putter I wonder how big a hit their games will take if they have to go back to a regular length. Any of you guys tried or are currently using long putters? I tried a belly putter a few times but never took on the course, never could get comfortable with it on the practice green.
54 hole leader bites the dust again. But the most stunning thing was Tiger continuing to choke on Sunday. The most embarassing for Tiger had to be the 3 putt on the 18th green. Also I actually think a doppleganger has taken over Phil, I mean in what universe would Phil stand on the 18th tee box and not say what the hell Bones give me my driver??? A safe 4 iron? What the hell? Oh yeah and Tigers choice of white tennis shoes with his black slacks...ugh. He used to be so well dressed!
RE: Long Putter I'm a traditionalist....so I still do croquet style with my flat stick.... RE: Phil on 18th That's what I like to see outa a caddie....You could hear Bones say "I want a committed full swing down that line...with this 4 Iron.....LOL.....he took the Phil outa the equation.....
When I saw Tiger's pathetic birdie putt on no. 2 I knew he was through. He had just finished giving Romo a great read on his putt and then pushed his own with a stroke that boardered on a yip. He's got self doubt and shows that he's feeling pressure. He's had to revamp his swing to take the incredible touque he used to generate off his knee. He's getting close to solving the mechanical part but the head part is going to be his biggest barrier.
I thought it was funny that coming down the stretch that both Faldo and Jim Nance observed that Tony Romo was holding up Tiger in the Pro/Am portion.
