Just thought I'd put out a topic we could drop in various tidbits we see for discussion out there. Like that Alabama Legislator who wants Auburn to claim 9 NC's. I think maybe the Irish can claim as many as 30 if we use that criteria! http://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2015/08/senator_proposes_resolution_ur.html
Longhorns have 2 guys quit today. Duke Catalon a RS FR RB from Houston is gone, and Cecil Cherry a true freshman LB from Florida. Sucks. Neither were going to be big contributors and Cecil probably was going to Red Shirt. But it still stings when guys decide to walk at this point.
Keep in mind, these assholes are in 'emergency session' because we don't have a budget passed. We have a Governor who won't accept anything other than his plan, his way with zero compromise while absolutely refusing to consider gambling or weed. In fact, he's slashed the state run liquor stores and has tried all he can to get them out of that money market as well. I am getting married in a few months, and we can't go down to get a marriage certificate because our jackass State Supreme Court Judge has monkeyed around following the Supreme Court's ruling regarding marriage equality, and they are taking the courts out of the marriage business all together. That means, we can't legally get married yet because Captain Cornhole believes his religious beliefs trump the US Constitution and the rulings of the Supreme Court. And this is what we're talking about... Auburn wanting 2 more national championships. When I moved here, everyone told me I'd have to pick a team or side in the Iron Bowl. 14 years later and I still haven't... but damn it Auburn's wealthier alumnus make it difficult.
I would have to side with Bama in the Auburn-Alabama decision. Hey.... speaking of Bama this is an encouraging statement made by John McElwain down in Gainesville recently: "“This is a true top-flight SEC defense. No doubt about it.” – McElwain on Florida’s defensive unit. I have to believe that spending 4 years with Saban at Bama in the championship years showed him what a true top flight SEC defense is supposed to look like... A side note to the above is that Auburn is becoming a popular choice to supplant Bama as the SEC Champ. CBSSports.com has the Tigers in the playoff..... but not Bama. The inference being that Muscramp makes such a difference on defense for Auburn that they will win the SEC and make the 4 team playoff.
Watched an interview with Aggie DE Miles Garrett today... He was asked if he thought he'd get more holding calls this season after all those that weren't called last year. He just laughed, and said "If it wasn't called, it wasn't holding." 8)
Hey Kes, Irish flipped a QB from Wash State, Ian Book. What was the reaction? No big deal or another reason to hate ND? Scott...here's a good read for you!! Baylor to the SEC, they're a good fit!! http://www.wacotrib.com/sports/baylor/mitch-blomert-baylor-would-be-big-success-in-sec/article_387ce733-d6b7-51fe-b081-e6df42fbaf9b.html
Re: Book It's more of the same. It's hard to retain top-flight commits when big programs come calling. Although, I am curious what ND is doing slumming a 3* from poor ol' Wazzu rather than recruiting 4* and 5* against the likes of UCLA and USC. Actually, I know the answer to that.
LOL...we've become the Kings of the 3* players this recruiting cycle. Seriously we have more 3 * players who those of us who follow recruiting are having to get excited because we trust the coaches and they are underrated or some other big program also was recruting them. We have 14 verbals, 10 of them 3* kids. We sit behind big programs like Texas Tech, Iowa, etc in the race for the most 3 stars! I'll be interested in Gators thoughts, they have 18 recruits verbals and 14 of them are 3 star and only 4 4 star....a long way from the days with Urban Meyer. Who by the way has Ohio State on top of the recruiting world with 19 recruits verbals, 2 5 star 13 4 star and a few 3 stars thrown in for good measure.....now that's a recruiting class to get excited about.
I've been thinking the same thing you've been thinking about ND's recruits. Not a dazzling class so far but maybe the coaches know what they are doing. I really don't get why we are lining up the 3 stars so fast.
No doubt, but really Ohio State has been one of the top recruiting schools for a long time. JT brought in some great classes and Meyer was a known recruiting machine from when he was at Fla. So it's no surprise that he's doing well at Columbus as well.
So, should I take that to mean "Well, if Wazzu was recruiting him, he's obviously good" or "Well, if Leach wanted that QB, then his arm isn't going to fall off"?
Visualize a scale like the scales of justice. On the right are the coaches with years of experience doing the recruiting, who have watched the recruits and spoken at length to them and their parents and HS coaches. On the left are the recruiting "gurus" who don't watch the kids play except for an occasional highlight video and who likely have never spoken with them or anyone else in their worlds. Which weighs the most? Which has the most credibility with me?
Meyer is truly one of the best at recruiting.... when his health isn't nagging at him and recruits know his system is humming on all cylinders. That is where Ohio State is right now. PLUS.... and Mack Brown fans can tell you the importance.... Meyer makes the most of his coaching opportunities when it comes to winning championships.
I don't disagree with you completely Sid, but you can't deny that while those ratings don't work out for every kid, and there are certainly examples of kid who were under rated and made big impacts. I'd rather be sitting where Ohio State fans are now with their recruiting class than were ND is with it's recruiting class. Now to be fair we've got a long way to go and probably will add 9 more kids to the class, maybe all of them will be 4 star kids. I don't know. But coaches get the kids that they can, I don't believe for a moment that Kelly just evaluated the kids out there and decided that these 3 star kids were the best for the program and that all the 4 and 5 star kids were over rated. TCU is certainly currently and example of a program doing very well and doing it without a lot of highly rated kids, but for the most part the top dogs in college football year in and year out are also the teams that recruit the best players as opposed to those who live off of finding diamonds in the rough and coaching them up.
Recruiting ratings are so bogus, it's beyond comical... They rate these kids to the THOUSANDTH of a POINT? REALLY? You are saying you see a .001 difference between Steve over there, and Mike over here? Give me a break. The truth is, there are a handful of kids who are truly "5 star". They are the guys who leap off the field at you, and even layman can see they are different. Probably 1 or 2 of those at each position in a given year. Myles Garrett for A&M was one as an example. Then there is a large group of "good" kids... they will probably develop into good players with a little time and good coaching. After that... it's everybody else. Recruiting has become such an industry now, you see services re-ranking kids continually... which is utterly ridiculous especially during the off*season. They are shuffled, and resorted over and over. Why? To keep subscribers interested. The idea that even an org like ESPN can fully evaluate thousands of players on a regular basis is laughable, much less the "smaller" services. It has nothing to do with the kids getting better or worse... just an effort to keep the money coming in for "new" info. I can't believe so many are willing to pay for that swill.
Terry, I agree with you on all counts. My point is that as long as we are winning 9-10 or more games a year with the players recruited by our coaches, I don't care how they are rated by the gurus. Of course, if the team's future performance does not meet realistic expectations, we certainly could point to recruiting as a significant factor.
 :!:  Scott is right. Anybody can pick the 5-stars. After them, grading kids who live 3,000 miles apart, on a scale to a thousandth of a point is absurd.
