Interesting article. I'm not sure how I feel about this. College sports watchdog believes FBS college football teams should break away from NCAA
I read that, but I don't think it's going to happen. It might make sense but it is a really big change that I don't think a lot of people want to accept.
This COVID19 virus might be the difference to just prompt a change. Nothing is sacred after this year of ups and downs.
Every development in recent years clearly points to college football morphing into a truly "professional" type format. The lengthening schedules, the bowl affiliations, the transfer of players for almost any reason, the pending revenue sharing. Remember when they used to show the players with their height, weight, class year and academic major under their photo? Now they rarely even mention that they are "students". Collective bargaining and player agents are right around the corner. If you like the $35 parking, $12 beers and $10 hot dogs the NFL showcases you'll love this.
That's scary but you have a good point. And don't forget the millions of $$$$ being spent on athletic facilities at the schools. A number of years back there was a big move to get the athletes into dorms, classes and other activities with regular students. Now there are major facilities being built to separate them.
This weekend, my son and granddaughter flew to Greenville, SC, for a showcase soccer tournament. Yesterday (Saturday) they had enough free time that he drove to Clemson to show her the campus. It also was his first trip to Clemson. He was impressed by the indoor football facility until they drove around it and saw two more buildings as big as the first with all three connected in the middle by what looked like a hub containing weight room/coaches offices/meeting rooms. He assumed that the three massive buildings were three separate indoor athletic fields. He said that compared to Notre Dame's very generous facilities (2 indoor athletic fields), it looked "extravagant". I'm sure that this complex is one of several reasons high profile football recruits are favorably impressed.
