I've never been a coach, but every weekend I see supposed experienced coaches totally screw up clock management, both in College and the NFL. I see teams take timeouts, then coming out of the timeout they don't get the play off and have to take another TO or they get a delay of game penalty. I see coaches piss away clock when they have no clock to piss away. Sometimes they let 20 secs run off when they should have called a time out immediately. It's very frustrating as a fan and you have to wonder why so many of these guys just can't manage the clock. Is it that hard?
Herm Edwards was the king of poor clock management. I saw several drives when he was with the Jets die in the red zone with TOs left. A couple were inside the 5.
