Thanks Bill that was a good article. That picture of Charlie is a big contrast to the pictures of him during his last few years at ND. In that photo he looks tan, rested and healthy. I also now understand why he left KC. I didn't know that in essence that he was going to be alone at KC with his wife and Hannah back in South Bend and Little Charlie at Texas. He's a family guy and that just wouldn't work for him. Thanks BTW did you finally finish that book? The book report is due April 1!
Our Gator friends at EDSBS had an article on Weis as well.. Their biggest point was that Weis is not Steve Addazzio! Weis according to EDSBS
Thanks for the articles Terry. Let me just say this, I am ecstatic that Charlie Weis is a Gator. Welcome aboard Charlie. Also, the more I read about him the better I like him. Your book that I have, which I will finish on Spring Break next week and return, has given me a very positive opinion of him, and now the whole thing about his family tells me he is not only a brilliant offensive coach, which we already knew, but that he has his priorities in the right place. Even if he was not a Gator I would be pulling for him to be successful, but he is a Gator and I am of course hoping he is wildly successful.
     If it would make you feel better Terry. We have a Senior Games flea market coming up in a couple of weeks, I could donate it there. Probably no one would buy it, but then it would end up at the Friends of the Library book store where it would probably languish a long time. But at least it wouldn't be on your hands. I do thank you for sending the Charlie Weis book though and like I said above I am very happy he is a Gator and happy for him that he is finding what he needs in his life.
Corey, I am still having a hard time believing he's a Gator. From the sounds of things he will be around a while also. Our good fortune.
nope, not at all. I'll go a step further and say I absolutely detest the current offense we have. I know folks are high on Kelly, but he went a long way to losing me with his comment about 'if people are looking for us to stack I backs and rush 7 yards per carry because that's what the defense is giving us, well..that's just not us' Our problem under Weis was defense and his overall lack of head coaching experience... period. The guy has a great offense. Now, not to hijack the thread but.. I think UF will have great offense with the guy.
"Weis couldn't coach" is a gross understatement. He couldn't control his sidelines, call plays, pick assistants, coach any positions; he made key decisions with mindless bravado and kept running his mouth when he had no reason to do anything but duck and cover. I think we're finding out now that he wasn't the recruiter we thought he was either. He is doing for the Gators the one thing he has always been good at; designing plays and a gameplan. If the Gators can keep him sequestered in a booth and on a short leash he should be successful at what he does best. I can still see him at critical junctures of a game discussing strategy with his teenage son while the assistants stood around looking lost. Then he would go for it on 4th and 18 from his own 34. It was at that point in life that I became proficient at spackling.
At a press conference the other day Weis made the point that when he finds a play that works against a defense he would run it until they stopped it. Someone on the Gator boards pointed out that he had games where there was almost all runs and games where it was almost all passing. That Charlie was taking what the defense was giving. In spades I might add. Hey off topic, but does any one besides me remember when Paul Brown brought his Browns into the NFL that he opened the season against the Phil Eagles and beat them handily. The head coach of the Eagles at that time made some comment about the Browns only being a passing team. Later in the season the Browns and Eagles played again and Brown made a point of not throwing a single pass and the Browns won again. As I recall the score was 13-7. The Browns did win the Championship that season and was an annual visitor to that championship game for a number of years.
I think Weis is a master mind as an OCoord. The offense that he put on the field in his last year was amazing, and if he'd had a decent defense his last couple of years he'd probably still be coaching ND. His problem is that he's terrible at staff building, he butchered the coaching choices for the defense and the staff over all. He is a tireless worker for sure, but that is no substitute for building a great staff, for having a unified goal in recruiting with everybody knowing their part and doing their job. Maybe his failure was a result of him being a 1st time HC, who knows. He should be able to build a great offense at UF, he'll be able to recruit players to UF that he could not to ND. Plus hopefully for the Gators Muschamp will turn out to be a great team/coaching staff builder. That's the one thing I've seen in Kelly is that he has really built a staff that is seemingly on the same page.
As I said, I miss his offense. On nearly every play, there was one audible or read with the intention of going for 6 (and I don't mean yards). His sins were that he just wasn't an HC. He's arrogant and blah blah blah all of that.. We can agree about those parts actually. I'll also say that of all the stupid things he said, there was nothing as stupid as saying he wouldn't take 7 ypc and keep running the ball down the throat of the defense if they gave it to us.. I mean Jesus, this isn't arena football. Maybe Kelly will adjust and swallow his pride. Just like with Chuckles, we'll see. I honestly look forward to the matchup of Charlie's offense and Saban's defense...
Strange Corey, but Weis made a comment just the opposite at one of the Gators press conferences during spring practice recently. He said he would keep running a play until the defense stopped it. Don't know if he has changed his mind or not but I am looking forward to next season.
 That doesn't mean that he runs the same play over and over out of the same formation. Charlie is notorious for running the same play out of different formations and Corey is correct; many of the plays have QB options and WR recognitions based on how the defense reacts to the formation. With Charlie, what you see is not always what you get. He might be the best OC in the nation... He's just not a head coach.
Bill, I was referring to our current HC, who on his coach's show quite firmly stated that. I was in shock. I watched the replay to make sure he said it. Weis will take what the defense gives him all day long.
Bill, re-read Corey's post. I think you'll see that he's saying exactly what Charlie said. I'm a Charlie Weis fan. Like the others, I know that he is not a head coach, but he's a heckuva OC. I hope he does well at Florida.
