I thought I'd get it all rolled into one topic. 1. I doubt Chollie is fired or resigns till after the Stanford game. 2. I guess that this week we'll hear the first, "Inside Sources" say Coach X is the target of ND AD Jack Swarbrick. 3. Candidates in no particular order a. Brian Kelly b. Gary Patterson c. John Gruden d. Jim Harbaugh e. Bob Stoops f. Nick Saban g. Urban Meyer h. Mark Ritch i. Chris Pederson j. Kurt Ferentz k. Skip Holtz l. Gary Barnett m. Mike Stoops n. Pat Fitzgerald 4. Will Swarbrick require the new guy to take the job after his last regular season game? Mack Brown left UNC right after the regular season, Rodriguez left WVA. I think Mike Price took the Bama job but came back and coached Wazzu in the Rose Bowl, Urban Meyer was the UF coach but wouldn't publically aknowledge it till after the Utah Bowl game. So coaches are all over the place. I believe Mark Dantonio left Cincy for MSU immediately and Kelly coached X-Michigan to it's bowl, and also Cincy in it's bowl. It's going to get wild in the next few weeks, Charlie won't be able to have a press conference where the one thing reporters want to know is about his job.
Strangely, the name I never hear thrown out is Dave Wannstedt. Believe it or not, he was at the top of the list to replace Bob Davie. He seems to be doing a good job at Pitt. Oh, and by the way, his most important asset when ND was searching to replace Davie......he attends mass every day.
If you hire Fulmer, the team will have a mass to huddle around. Sorry, I'm pushing that one too far.  8)
Some have already brought up that Kelly is supposedly "Pro Choice" and the unfortuneate incident back in CMU where he made a comment that implied black kids from the inner city had a more violent tendency or something to that effect. One of John Grudens qualifications used to be that when he was a HS QB in South Bend while his dad coached for Ara that his radio played the fight song in the morning.
ND coach <r>Well I've already made my choice clear. It's all about B. Kelly. Hopefully Swarbrick is already on this so we don't get caught a day late this time. <br/> <br/> I do wonder though, everyone seems to think that Kelly wound take the job if offered. Has he ever really said anything that would indicate he would take the ND job if offered? Lord knows over the past few years assumptions by a lot of teams have shown to be premature in many cases.<br/> <br/> A couple of comments about some of the other candidates listed:<br/> <br/> Barnett.....you are joking aren't you Terry.<E></E> <br/> <br/> Harbaugh.....no please, besides he will probably be taking R. Rods spot up in michigan after this season. <E></E></r>
ND/Kelly <r>Terry,<br/> <br/> Yeah, I know everything about Kelly looks good. Looks like the right guy at the right time. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much though. We won't know for about 2 or three weeks if he'll say yes.<br/> <br/> I do remember him talking to one of the sports radio hosts recently and he was talking about how he was trying to get UC to upgrade their facilities and he sounded as if he would go elsewhere if he couldn't get a promise from them to do so. You have to think that that is probably not going to happen as the figure he will go somewhere soon no matter what they do. He's just to hot a commodity right now. <br/> <br/> Who know? We'll see. <E>8)</E></r>
A couple of posts on internet BBs that Bob Stoops is in South Bend at the moment..... can neither confirm nor deny. Thoughts?
George, during the two Gator coaching searches after Spurrier left our BB's were always full of Stoops sightings. In fact it was announced on our BB after Spurrier left that he had accepted the job. Then it turned out not to be true and we got Zook. I would be not be very trusting of rumors right now, especially Stoop rumors. However if you would get him you would be getting a good coacyh
Yeah I don't believe any Stoops rumours. He's having a rough year this year by OU standards, so I imagine he's even less likely to leave right now.
Terry, What are your thoughts on Harbaugh? Apparently he is a pretty good recruiter. With all the bad blood between him and Michigan, I do not see him going back there, if the job were tendered. Don
ND <r>Not that anyone asked me but here is my opinion on Stoops and harbaugh:<br/> <br/> <I><s></s>The only time I want to see either one of them in SB is when ND is kicking their respective arses on the football field.<e></e></I><br/> <br/> On the Stoops sighting: Take my word for it, Stoops is not and was not in SB recently. <E>8)</E></r>
Well I guess you can remove Jon Gruden from the list. Mike and Mike have reported that Gruden just signed a multiyear extension with ESPN. To me that is very shocking, while he seems to be pretty good at his role on MNF I would have thought he'd be chomping at the bit to get back into coaching. The only thing I can think of is that he doesn't want to get involved in the coaching search with Notre Dame and that it's a smoke screen to get him to the end of the NFL season when he can start negotiating with the NFL. Maybe his contract includes an out for the NFL. With regards to Harbaugh, he would be a controversial choice for the Irish for a couple of reasons. 1) Inspite of his success at Stanford this year, his 2 previous years weren't exactly successfull and this is his 1st big time coaching job. So experience alone would be a factor that works against him. 2) He was villified by ND fans for an alleged incident with Jimmy Clausen last year, only reason I say alleged is that neither party will really talk about it. 3) His Stanford team lost to the worst team in Irish history. 4) and maybe the most important he is a Michigan Man...Rockne would roll over in his grave (although nobody seemed to mind that Corwin Brown was a Michigan Man).
According to ESPN Insider Charlie has already been "released" and The two leading candidates for the Irish HC are Bob Stoops and Kirk Ferentz. Supposedly, Stoops has told confidants that he would be "interested." Ferentz has said nothing.
