  Sitting here watching the CAHS playoffs and there are some interesting developments... Right now, Folsom HS (NoCal) is beating Helix HS (San Diego). The offensive coordinator for Folsom HS is Bobby Fresques. He was the QB at Damien HS when Corey played there. He was a good one. http://footballuniversity.org/coach/bobby-fresques/ Helix HS produce Bill Walton in basketball. A week ago, I was watching the CIF (SoCal) finals between St. Francis HS and Rancho Verde HS. At half time they interviewed two old guys who played for St. Francis the last time they won the title 53 years before in 1964. I was thunderstruck. It was like I was in a time machine. I've met both of those guys before and they were talking about a game that I attended: St. Francis vs. Pomona Catholic (renamed Damien HS my senior year). It was one of the greatest HS games ever played in this state. Both teams were undefeated at 7-0 and ranked #1 and #2. The QB for PC was Dennis Shaw, who later led the nation in passing at San Diego Sate and was Rookie of the Year for the Buffalo Bills. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Shaw The St. Francis QB was Dennis Flagg, who was one of the old men they were interviewing. I used to think he was 10 feet tall, but he's about Sid Baker's size. He described how PC dominated the game and led 14-0. Then he led a furious comeback and tossed a TD pass to the other old man (Brewer) and they had the miracle they needed. It was true. I was there and it happened just that way. I was on the freshman team and we played first, winning 20-0. Then our JV team got beat on a last second miracle; then came the varsity game that people still talk about. Both teams were loaded with future D-1 and NFL players. It was a classic... Tomorrow's game for the large schools state title is Mater Dei vs De La Salle. Mater Dei is currently ranked #1 in the nation. Just another friendly encounter between two Catholic schools who both believe that God is on their side...
Helix also produced Reggie Bush and Alex Smith. There's a lot of talent down there at Helix. Bobby was a dick, but he was a very good QB. His problems were all in the locker room and it was one of the reasons why we went to the title game despite splitting time with the 2 QBs, when Fresques was CLEARLY the better of the two QBs. I'm sure he'll make a fine coach. Did St Francis win? Mater Dei vs De La Salle is like Darth Vader vs Darth Vader. It's hard to pick a likable winner there.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog. To quote Lou Holtz: God doesn't care who wins.......but His Mother does. My money's on Mater Dei.
 The game is on now. The star for Mater Dei is Amon-Ra St. Brown. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=amon+ra+st.+brown&view=detail&mid=A289514C6D4993E610ACA289514C6D4993E610AC&FORM=VIRE
 .. 1st Quarter: Mater Dei 21 De La Salle 0 This looks ugly... Another Catholic School won a small schools championship earlier in the week. Serra HS in NoCal won it thanks to their new coach who recommended by one of their former players: Tom Brady. Mater Dei QB J.T. Daniels is a candidate for Gatorade National Player of the Year. He's committed to USC...
Daniels WR corps at USC may not be as good as his WR corps at Mater Dei Here's hoping the Irish snag St. Brown down the stretch.
  Mater Dei 52 De La Salle 21 De La Salle hasn't lost a regular high school game in NoCal since 1991. The two teams played 16 players in that game who're currently holding major college scholarships. Both lines weighed well over 300 lbs per player...
