    I've always believed that high school football in Ohio is as good as any. Why wouldn't I.... I played it myself. With that said, look at this article I found in today's Dayton (Oh) Daily News...

    Looks like the rubber meets the road in September.

    Ohio battles nation in 'Herbstreit' challenge
    Top high school football teams clash in September
    By Mark Gokavi

    Dayton Daily News

    We'll see just how big and bad Ohio high school football is when it goes nationwide.

    In the second annual Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge, many arguments will be settled on the field, not in some poll.

    Some of Ohio's best will be tested by well-known teams from Texas, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Florida, New Jersey, California, Arkansas and Arizona.

    "That's a big part of the fun, to find out how does Ohio stack up against some of the national powers," Herbstreit said Wednesday. "We're going to find out."

    There are 10 games (including an all-Ohio matchup) Sept. 15 and 16, with six games at Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium and four at Kent State's Dix Stadium.

    Herbstreit, a Centerville native and analyst on ESPN's College GameDay, put his alma mater on the schedule next to many strong Ohio teams. The Elks will face Don Bosco Prep from Ramsey, N.J.

    "I think they have a pretty good tradition," the ex-Ohio State quarterback said. "It's not just a Cincinnati vs. USA event.

    "The goal was to try to get the entire state represented. That's why as this goes in '06 and '07 and beyond, Northmont will (be) in this. Wayne will probably be involved in this."

    Krebsie, this is year two. At last years inaugural, Colerain spanked Tyler Lee, the big school state champion from Texas - 27-12. Archie and Earl Campbell were honorary captains. It's Ohio -v- the USA. I see some great match-ups there....Texas went down, Cali next? Elder -v- DeLaSalle - now that is some good high school football!

    Actually...

    <t>Tyler Lee was the 2004 champion... so the team was not the same in 2005. Still a good rep, but not as good in 2005. <br/>
    <br/>
    They should send some Houston area schools...<br/>
    <br/>
    Bet the kids have fun, no matter who wins!</t>

    This year they are brining up Springdale Ark, a team that was great last year with the 5 Div 1 players and the future Ark OCoord as the coach. This year all of those are gone.

    But Texas high has future Meeechigan QB, Ryan Mallet so that should be interesting. I say future, but Mack is after him also.

    Scott, I think they matched up the two 2004 state champs....Colerain wasn't as strong in 05 either...I think they lost 2 games or so in 05.

    Remember when Moeller, under Gerry Faust, took on all comers in the 70's. Kicked butt from sea to shining sea.

    Moeller is in this tournament also... their coach is Bob Crable.

    Don Bosco should represent NJ well. I don't know how strong there supposed to be in 06 but the QB is a 3rd year starter and has pretty good bloodlines. He's Phils Sims youngest son.

    It sounds like a great weekend of high school football. I'll be retired by then so maybe I'll make the trip.

    Don Bosco should be up to the task. The Centerville Elks are from Dayton, Ohio and have a top notch program as well. Big stadium... they actually sell season tickets and parking passes.

    Recent Centerville alumni include Kirk Herbstreit, Mike Nugent and A.J Hawk. They send several players to D1 schools each year.

    I don't see any SoCal teams in this thing. De La Salle is up in NoCal and they recruit nationally, so its not really a Cal team at all...
