That's a good move by Spikes. Obviously though he needed to because of the bad PR this whole scenario brings to the rest of the team. On a side note......there is a good reason the Georgia RB indicated a desire for leniency for Spikes and that is because he probably was close by when Spikes got his helmet ripped off and his eye poked and now this today from Meyer: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/12472830/florida-coach-sends-video-of-tebow-hit-to-sec It's laughable almost that everybody gets their panties in a bunch about Spikes when all game long Georgia played dirty and tried to agitate the Gators several times. .......just sayin......
This is over now and I am glad to see that he stepped up to the plate. No matter what the reason, I commend him for it. I must ask you this Dave: Would it be laughable if the recipient had been your son and he was blinded? There is nothing about this whole situation that can be described as laughable. Sorry, but that is my opinion.
Some of the transparencies here is what is laughable Tom. Spikes acknowledged what he did was wrong and now is suspended for a game. Meanwhile the actions of Georgia players goes unnoticed and with no comment. I am glad Meyer saw fit to point a few things out about the Dawg's play to the SEC.
It is all in what is cought on tape Dave. If it is not caught on tape, it is not given the publicity. For all of the people that rob liquor stores, only the ones that are shown on America's dumbest criminals get the publicity, bad as it may be.
Well.....I guess Meyer has a tape of a late hit on Tebow he wants to show the SEC and I saw for myself when Ga was penalized 15 yards for ripping off Spike's helmet. Those were not as sensational as was the Spike's play and not worthy of the same amount of scorn....which I understand but I also think it is pertinent to see the whole picture of that game in Jax. You Tube strikes again I guess.
Sorry Dave but knocking Tebow to the ground with a late hit isn't quite the same as trying to gouge and/or scratch somebody's eyes.
Gouging a guys eyes is certainly bad, especially if you manage to do that. How about choking? Mike Golic On Spikes and Mike Golic on Mike Golic I find it kind of amazing the double standard Golic has. It was alright for him to choke someone but he has condemed Spikes this whole week.
I haven't commented on this because I hadn't seen it. I just looked it up on YouTube and I have to say I think it's absolutely terrible and I wouldn't complain if he was suspended for the entire season. To me this goes beyond dirty. If it was at the bottom of a pile after a fumble I would say yeah it's dirty but this is just a random play that Spikes wasn't even involved in. There is no excuse for that play. This guy just raised serious character concerns about himself. That was an incredible thuggish thing to do and I don't care what the Georgia RB had to say about it. That said, I applaud him for taking responsibility for his actions but I still think he got off light. Oregon kicked a guy off the team for a simple punch earlier this season. Spikes looks like he is trying to pull somebody's eye out of their head. I'm sure that this kind of thing happens more frequently than we realize and, quite possibly, by players on each one of our favorite teams but that still is no excuse. I think it's a horrible incident no matter and I don't understand how anyone can defend it.
I certainly understand AQUILA, it happens frequently so we should suspend Spikes for the season. Makes sense to me. What do you think of Golic's comments, both of them?
A lot of things happen frequently and there are consequences for them. Are you saying that since it happens a lot there shouldn't be just punishment for it? That makes a lot of sense too... Golic sounds like he has a double standard for himself.
Hold it AQUILA, I never said there shouldn't be punishment, I in effect said that suspended for the season makes no sense. If someone gets kicked out of a game for a foul then they have to miss one half of the next game. Spikes is now up to one whole game. It strikes me that it's enough.
Ah yes....and it's not the same as having someone gouge your own eyes and rip your helmet off either. Not the same to be sure but it just illustrates there was an extra amount of ******** going on in that game and Georgia was right in the thick of that. But....none of you saw the game so you don't really have any opinion about that.
It just might be best for me to back out of here for a couple of days, I probably won't manage that but at this point I can't believe some of the things I'm reading from people I really respect. With all due respect Terry I'm not buying that one. There is no way a guy is going to reach thorough a face mask and do serious damage to someone's eye. If so tell me when it's ever happened. However blindsiding someone with a very hard hit like was done to Tebow could cause serious injury to a back, neck or head. There have been players paralyzed from hard hits, people's career ended with sever knee injuries from cheap hits. I can document a few of those if you like, just how many serious eye injuries can you document from a football game. And by Golic's own words a lot goes on in a pile. I just don't agree with your statement.
Bill, Hitting someone is part of the game. Whether it is late or from a wrong angle is an issue. However, because hitting is acceptable, a late hit, or one from a slightly wrong angle, is understandable unless it is blatantly wrong. Yes, late hits can cause injury but so can clean hits. It is part of the game. Intentionally and maliciously trying to damage another player's eyes whether there are documented cases or not is unacceptable and should never be considered part of the game. When did poor sportsmanship (at best) become an accepted part of the game? Both you and Dave, and rightfully so, came out heavily against the FSU team that maliciously "twisted the leg" of a Gator player in a pile that caused him to miss the Tennessee game late in the season (rescheduled game because of 911). Remember that? You called it malicious and labeled FSU a dirty program because of it. Before the Gator camp circles the wagons, I am NOT calling the Gator program dirty. I'm just reminding you of how it felt when it happened to you. I don't know Mike Golic. I don't give a rats hind end about how he portrays himself. He is a media personality and most if not all of them are scum to begin with. You on the other hand have higher standards and care what others think. Don't put yourself in the same boat with Golic.
Tom, either you are totally misunderstanding my position or I am very poor at articulating it. Spikes was wrong, plain and simple. He deserved to get suspended. I am not defending Spikes action in this instance. What I have taken issue with is the reaction of many people and how they want to attack Meyer and Spikes. Both the media and here. And oh yeah I remember the incident you are referring to and almost posted it myself. First no action was taken at FSU, there was action taken at Florida. Second as I recall when that was brought up it didn't receive much of a reception here or with the media. However an incident with a Gator player caused a lot of howls, with the media and here. Let me see, on the first post here one of our posters labeled Spikes a thug. A Notre Dame fan, interesting that he has nothing to say about Golic. Regardless, in my opinion there has been a double, even triple standard applied. I do not, and never have supported what Spikes did. I am not calling for the Georgia player to be disciplined. I am weary of the double standard.
Good recall and good analysis. I doubt Meyer is that upset with a late hit on Tebow that he perceived to be just an error or a miscalculation by the Ga player. I suspect he thinks there was malicious intent and a purposeful late hit and everyone who watches college football that has a fair sense of things should be concerned about that after Tim's recent concussion. On FSU...I remember distinctly a late hit to Danny Weurffel's chin in an upward motion in the 1995 Sugar Bowl that wasn't called and that seemed to affect his play thereafter. FSU got their's in the end on that late hit nonsense though in the next Sugar Bowl the two teams played.
