I remember the 4 Bowls..PERIOD. ROSE, SUGAR, COTTON,ORANGE. this is so foolish having 30 bowl games..some in locals unheard of. Teams barely playing 500 ball...and they are in a "bowl" ? We sat around a radio listening to Harry Wismer and Bill Stern. First game was the Orange Bowl...followed by sugar, cotton..and then the Granddaddy of all Bowls! As much as I enjoy foosball...I havent watched a "Bowl game" in 40 years! 44 days to P & C !!!!!
Yes and they were all played on the same day so we all could get back to work the next day! Those were the good ole days jif.
good copy on that, Don...Im sure you also remember the EAST/WEST game from old Kezar Stadium in San Francisco!!
Well there are way too many bowls that is for sure, when you have two teams like Illinois and UCLA in a bowl game both of whom fired their coaches at the end of the season you know things are out of whack.
How about the College All-star Game in Soldier Field, Chicago......College All-star team vs. NFL Champs? A few of us are showing our age. P.S. IMO the college bowl games have become a reward for teams who reach .500 or better during the season. The reward? You get one more month of practice and one more game to set up your program for the next season. I don't agree with that rationale, but I have to admit that I enjoy watching college football during the holidays.
It's become conventional wisdom that a team benefits from the extra practice allowed for a bowl game. So everybody wants to go to a bowl game even if in the end the school loses money doing so, not to mention that it's somewhat of a recruiting issue to be able to say you've been to a bowl X years in a row. I'm glad the College All-Stars vs NFL Champion is no longer being played. It kept players out of camp where they needed to be and the games were rarely even interesting.
I agree, Terry. It was interesting to me only when I was a kid because of the excitement of seeing all the best college players on the field. As I grew older, I realized that it was not an exciting game, about as exciting as the Pro Bowl is today. I never missed it. I mentioned it only because I thought it fit with the nostalgia tone of this thread.
