If you're a history nut, especially a Civil War buff, I've got a recommendation for you. Newt Gingrich has written a trilogy of books on the war starting with a simple premise, ie. Longstreet convices Lee not to attack Little Round Top but instead, outflank the Union Army and defend superior ground between the Union Army and Wash. The more you know about the Civil War, the more you'll appreciate his effort. Oh, and when you're finished with those 3 books, try his latest historical novel, Pearl Harbor. Great reading.
JO'Co' That's the second in the three books. Read his Gettysburg first, Grant Comes East second and Never Call Retreat last. They're fun.
OK, I will. I also picked up My Life on the Plains by George Custer and Boots and Saddles by his wife Libby. I'm tired of reading what others say about the Custers. I want to hear it from them...
Since it's the fall of our discontent, I thought I read about folks who had REAL problems not just a crappy football team. I'm reading Gallipoli by L. A. Carlyon. If you think that the Irish offense struggles....
No. I got sidetracked, which happens a lot teaching history, because I keep getting distracted like a baby looking at shiny objects. I'm currently re-reading Chernow's Alexander Hamilton at home and Frederick Douglass' Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass at work. Newt's books and the Custers are still stacked next to bed. Hopefully I'll get to them in the next week...
