Vols' backup QB to join tennis team

Quarterback Bo Hardegree will add tennis to his athletic resume at the University of Tennessee.

The junior did not dress or play for the Vols in a 4-0 loss to No. 2 Ohio State on Friday, but he is expected to play doubles this season for 32nd-ranked Tennessee.

As a result, Hardegree will likely not participate in spring practice, which begins Feb. 22. Missing spring practice would not preclude him from playing football this fall, but his future with the football team is uncertain.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Hardegree was a standout tennis player while at Jackson Central-Merry. He claimed the Class AAA singles title as a junior in 2002 before switching his focus to doubles his senior season.

Hardegree has played one game in his UT career, late in a game against Memphis last season, and has not thrown a pass.

Interesting combination of talents. He's a big boy and would be an imposing figure at the net in doubles. I'll bet the tennis coach is very happy.

Not a combination you usually see, but as Sid say's at his size he's a formidable opponent.

Where was he on the Football depth chart? One thing I'm sure he considered is that as a scholarship football player he gets a full scholarship, 1st string or 5th string, as a tennis player he is very unlikely to get a full scholarship, those are usually kids who are ranked very high (nationally) comming out of high school and anticipated to the the #1 or #2 player on the squad. A kid who only plays doubles will likely be lucky to get a 1/4 scholarhip.

At ND our backup QB from last year (Evan Sharpley) is also a baseball player (probably that and track are the most common 2nd sports for FB players). There was speculation that with the arrival of Jimmy Clausen and the presence of 2 highly rated red shirt frosh would cause him to quit football and concentrate on baseball. I however doubt that will happen as he would be giving up a 40K full ride for at best about 1/4 to 1/2 of a scholarship. I'd think he'll stick around with football even if he's 5th string!! :) At least if I were his daddy that's what I'd recommend!! :)
