The story of government corruption in Bell, California just gets worse and worse and worse. Amid rumors that the former city manager, Mr. Rizzo, may be associated with the Mafia, it appears that the election which allowed this official theft was rigged too. Police hand carried absentee ballots door-to-door to secure victory in an election that nobody ever heard of. Now we learn that lots of other people at Bell City Hall were paid huge salaries. These included policemen who made $229,000.00 and women who were paid even more than that to act as clerks and directors for departments that had no employees...

No they're not dumb. As one woman put it, "I have two college degrees and I've voted in every election since I was 18, but I never heard of this special elecion that allowed them to have these kind of salaries."

Fewer than 400 votes were cast...all on absentee ballots... hand carried door-to-door... by police officers...only in the Spanish speaking areas...

This whole thing sure looks like a Mafia takeover of a small town and Bell, CA isn't alone. Bell's next door neighbor, Maywood, CA had laid off EVERY city worker, policeman and fireman. So where does their tax money go? It was during the L.A. Times investigation of Maywood that investigative reporters stumbled onto the Bell situation. Most of the people in these areas don't speak English and had no idea that they were paying higher property taxes than Beverly Hills to live in a poor area...

More from today's LA Times continuing investigation:
    - Mr. Rizzo had perks and insurance on top of his salary for a total annual compensation package of $1.5 million.
    - Mr. Rizzo had 128 sick days and vacation days per year.
    - Assistant City Manager Angela Spaccia had a total yearly compensation package of $845,000.
    - Police Chief Randy Adams, who had been on the job one year...$770,000.
    - These people were also provided with free medical insurance for life.

    Some thoughts:
The governor of this state has an annual salary of $179,000 and he refuses to accept it..
