LOL...Feller was throwing on flat ground with no spikes, no rubber to kick off of and in civies....and he still threw what had to be high 90's or 100mph fast ball.

 

Question, what exactly does the height of the mound give to the pitcher? I know that with a higher mound that they have better era's and when they lower the mound the era's go up. Is it just the angle of the ball coming at the batter?

The "modern era" of baseball begins with the pitcher's mound and pitcher's plate or "rubber" in 1893. Throwing downhill gives the batter a more difficult angle to strike the ball and the pitcher more momentum when throwing low strikes...unfortunately it also tend to flatten out the curves when they're thrown incorrectly and leaves them "hanging" in the air above the belt of the batter...

There was a lot of tinkering with the pitcher's position until 1893, when all participants agreed that the optimum situation for all had been reached and very little has changed since then; the only large change being in the height of the mound which was lowered in 1969 after Denny McLain and Bob Gibson dominated hitters in 1968.
