Not out yet but the Coaches and AP Polls are pretty much in agreement and set up an interesting scenario. The first five in both polls, in no particular order, , are Florida Texas Alabama LSU Boise State Actually they are in the same order. However in looking at the polls three of the teams are SEC teams and after the Conference playoffs no more than one of them can could finish unbeaten and by all that has been holy and right in the past only one team from any conference should make the Championship game. So that leaves only two teams above Boise State. If one or both stumble along the way then Boise State has one heck of a good chance of making the game. While I agree in principal with the article I posted earlier about Boise State I have to also admit that I've watched them for years when I get a chance and always have rooted for them. I hope that two teams survive from the Big 12 and SEC with enough credentials to make the game. However if not I have to admit that this year if Boise St goes the rest of the way, which is likely, then if there is not a logical match up from two of the five teams ahead of them, and no more than one from the SEC, then I not only don't have a problem with Boise State making it, I would probably hope they would. Oklahoma might be the wild card for me. How's that Corey?
The rubber will meet the road when Texas finishes the season undefeated, the SEC Champion has 1 loss and Boise State is undefeated. Oh yeah there will be some heated debates!
You know Terry I was thinking the same thing only with Florida being undefeated. My feelings are this, I think, that if the SEC and Big 12 Champions are once beaten then they have a pretty good chance of beating out Boise State. I'm not sure if that's true with once beaten winners of any of the other conferences. Probably USC and Ohio State would fit into that mold of perhaps jumping Boise State. It could get interesting with Boise being this high this early.
Bill I don't know enough about the teams Boise State plays from here on out other than most likely they will be favored to win, they play Tulsa who is a good CUSA team but was beaten by OU 45-0, they have Nevada the preseason #2 WAC team who's started slowly and was beaten by ND 35-0. It just seems to me that they are poised to creep up and it can't be stopped. LSU goes to UGA and entertains UF, unlikely that they win both those games. So you have to figure Boise to #4 in 2 weeks or maybe even next week. I don't think UF or Alabama will slip before the SECCG, Texas has OU and if they lose, Boise to #3. If the SECCG is #1 vs #2, there is no way they just flip places in the standings keeping Boise at #3, that's the same situation as Ohio STate/Mich in 2006. Boise will have to take care of business and they will have to win games by good margins, no close wins or BCS conference teams could jump them. But if they do they'll migrate to #3 before the Championship games are played by the conferences.
I watched LSU get outplayed by a very average (at best) Miss State. Who the hell put them #4? That was a game in which Miss State turned the ball over 4 times and it still took a miracle, last second deflection on a goal line stand for LSU to win that game. Irish fans are lighting the torches and getting the pitch forks for barely beat Purdue and if Purdue met Miss State tomorrow, I'd be shocked if the Boilermakers didn't hand them their ass.. but enough about LSU, they will get beat sooner rather than later. I agree it will all come down to the wire.. And Boise will get passed over for one, if not more, one loss teams from the Big6. Business as usual.
Corey, I'm not quite agreeing that Boise will get passed this year. In a couple of weeks when we see the computer polls it may become clearer. However let me play a little devil's advocate here and with Boise's schedule being pretty easy from hear on out how do you personally think that should affect whether they go to the championship game over a 1 loss Florida or Texas for instance?
I don't think Boise will get passed if they take care of business. I think the ground work has been laid by previous Boise teams, and by previous Utah teams. I would be shocked if Corey didn't think an undefeated Boise should be in the BCS championship game, he's been such an advocate that Mtn West and WAC teams have been screwed by the system. I'd bet he'd even go for them over a once beaten PAC10 team!
I agree on both points Terry. I wouldn't be upset with Boise State because of their body of work over the last ten years or so. I'll say one thing though, if they made it there would be some hellish pressure for them to be at least competitive. Also I think you are right about Corey.
My previous thoughts on the subject are documented. I'd say an unbeaten Boise should go over a once beaten Pac10 team. Last year, the Pac10 got its ass handed to it by the MWC in noncon games. After the bowls, we found out that the Pac10 was actually really good dominating bowl games and other noncon opponents.. but the MWC was better..and they produced an undefeated champion. Who else did that? Nothing I say will really matter. The system is broken. Even if Boise is to get in this year, it's a shame that it takes nearly a decade worth of winning just to even hope to get an actual sniff. Meanwhile, all teams like South Florida have to do is go unbeaten winning in the Big East.
Where's Eva Peron...er Madonna .. when you need her.... Don't Cry for Me Boise State might be a big seller.
I don't think there will be any crying for them. Just the same people pissed off they get passed over. Last year they were beaten in a bowl game by a Mountain West team and somehow that proved they were overrated. The last time a Pac10 team got their hands on South Florida, Oregon hung 56 on them using the 4th string QB. On field results won't matter, just look at the USA Today poll.
You need to lighten up and smell the roses sometimes Corey. No one can correct all the world ills, or even college football ills. Me, I am not in big disagreement with most of the things you say, I just have decided that the world is sometimes one big compromise and I believe in enjoying as we go. I think that Boise has the best shot yet this year for teams outside the BCS. Now don't think that it means I am rooting for them as I'm obviously rooting for the Gators, and if we make it then my choice for an opponent at this point would be Texas. Boise would be second.
Boise is going to get a BCS Bowl game if they just take care of business. With them likely getting as high as #4 pretty soon and maybe higher who knows, even a single loss would not knock them out of a BCS bowl. Boise State's schedule though is very weak. Oregon is a top echelon Pac10 team and they beat them, that's 1. I guess you can give them that Fresno State is consistently a good team, well coached, who will come to your place and either beat you or give you a good game. They are 1-3 losing on the road in close games to Wiscy and Cincy so they are a good team, that's 2. I can't really see another good team on their schedule. The Irish beat Nevada 35-0, they played 2 bad MAC teams who are a combined 0-8 at this point and they have 1AA UCDavis who's the bottom of the rung in their BigWest Conference. So I won't really cry too much if they run the table and still don't get into the BCS championship game. If the Mtn West ends up with an undefeated team I would say they should be ranked ahead of Boise because they will have played a much tougher schedule and would have a more legit beef if they don't get into the NC game and a 1 loss major team does.
Bill, I'm plenty light. I'm just not getting worked up or even really forming much of an opinion on the subject at the moment. It's just too early to tell what will happen this year. We've seen the injustices of years past and while they certainly do serve as a predictor for BCS conduct in the future, there's a lot of onfield football to be played. Honestly, it's just not worth getting worked up over. I had an interesting conversation with a guy while out in LA. I've known him since HS and he know writes for one of the country's largest newspapers. He covers sports. He's run into so many people, as have I, who think the BCS is deeply flawed and is downright prejudiced in its selection methods... but it has gone on so long now, they don't care. They just accept and move on. They love college football so they root for their team and let the chips fall where they may. He made a rather humorous comparison between the BCS and Hollywood... The rest of America just eats it up, but locals know it's a sh*thole...
I'm pretty sure that a one loss LSU, USC, Florida, Texas would jump over Boise State in the polls. If Bradford comes back and plays, and beats Texas then probably the Sooners, assuming they beat Miami would jump over them also. PJ in Jersey
