After this season the BCS era as it were.... is done. The 4 team playoff will be the new deal in 2014 and I think most everyone agrees it will be better......including this scribe: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/eye-on-college-football/21621484/13-for-13-death-to-the-bcs
It's the old careful what you wish for, the BCS era basically killed the rest of the bowl games, well that and the political correctness of making sure a team like NIU who nobody but NIU fans want to see gets a shot at the big bowl money. The old bowl system produced many great games, sure it also produced lots of Nat'l Championships that weren't won in 1 vs 2 head to head matchups. But still bowl season was much better when the bowls were not tied into conferences and the promoters could pick the teams and get more interesting matchups. The new 4 team playoff will further kill the rest of the bowls but will give us more of a decided on the field champion for sure. I think at this point they just need to drop the bowls and go to some sort of expanded playoff.
I have been saying all along that a playoff would really hurt the bowls.....and I think it will. The NIU thing is worse. Sure it allows the little guy to share in the spotlight but the Sugar Bowl should have had UF vs. Oklahoma and I guarantee that not only would the Gators have played a little better but they would have sold thousands more tickets as would OU. I like the bowls as something to look forward to in the holiday season.... and games like Michigan vs. Sou Car are memorable tilts that are a joy to watch and I want these types of interconference match-ups to continue.
