Looks like Houston is going to catch the east side of Ike... Hope you are on high ground and your trees have deep roots!
I'm ready Scott, my yard man has an agriculture degree from Texas A&M so I know everything that can be done has been done!!
As.... <t>I sit here in Houston waiting on this mess to hit what irony in that two weeks from today my wife and I head to Breckenridge Colorado for a weeks vacation and cool weather.<br/> <br/> This could be a tough 24 hours coming.</t>
Talk about your calm before the storm. It's a beautiful morning in my neigborhood. Too bad the golf courses are all shut down (I checked!) I'd go out and play a round. This is so much different from Rita. For Rita the media and the city were screeching get out of town, and scaring people to leave who should have just hunkered down at home. This time they have worked at getting those people out who need to be out, and telling the rest of us to hunker down. I'm at the office right now with a clear view of I-10 it's light traffic flowing freely. Nothing like the massive jam from Rita. There was a big rush at the gas pump yesterday starting at noon, and a lot of places sold out. But because the highways weren't clogged with traffic and the majors have tankers staged outside the strike zone there gas available today. I topped off my tank this AM, where as I couldn't find it last night, oh I guess i could have burned a 1/2 tank driving all over town looking for it but I was at 3/4 so I wasn't worried. They are saying that they will have more tankers ready to come in after the storm moves through. Kudos to the Govt, State, Local and National for learning their lessons from Rita and Katrina. I'm sure we'll lose power, and even if I don't by some miracle the local NBC station will no doubt prempt the ND/Mich game for local coverage of the storm. So I won't see it no matter what. I went to the store and they are all out of bread but there was a lot of water, soda, gatorade, beer available. I bought tortillas instead, they were loaded with those. PB&J on a tortilla is really pretty good!! Terry
We'll be thinking about ya TOK....stay safe and God bless.....I hope your power is back before primetime!
Stay safe Larry & Terry - we'll be thinking about you. Ike hasn't sent you any warning bands? Wednesday when he was just leaving Cuba, we had a rougue outer band come up North Central Florida and through Gainesville. The wind was swirling, the rain was blowing all over - it was quite eerie. You would think a storm was coming in the coast instead of still hundreds of miles away in the gulf. I started thinking that something like that would be a good wake-up call for anyone in its path. Easy to ignore for us in Florida, but if I was in the bulls-eye thinking it would be fine to stay, that warning shot might have been enough to get the heck out of Dodge! I am glad you are both well inland. It will still be a mess, but its much better than being near the coast. My Mother is only 15~20 miles inland in Jupiter and she rode out Frances and Jean (and the surprising bad Wilma approach from the back). She might have been a little white nuckled at times, but came through with no real problems. As long as you can learn to enjoy an electricity-less lifestyle! Here's hoping you get no worse from Ike. Take care. Wendy
T... whats a tortilla? Is that like a southern bagel? When we get hurricaine / blizzard warnings up here in the Ocean State., the big super market items are BREAD, MILK, TOILET PAPER..in that order! really!
winds starting to kick up a little bit around here, we should be seeing the outer bands sometime this afternoon. Traffic on I-10 has picked up and is running slow still nothing like the mess for Rita, more like rush hour.
TOK, landfall sometime early am? Middle of the night are the worst...I always try and stay up, just in case I need to do something..... He looks nasty...Galveston waterfront is gonna get whacked!
This is unreal. The gas hijack that is going on here is amazing. Stations in Greenhill and near B'ham are charging $5.35 a gallon for gas (it was roughly between $3.25 and $3.50 yesterday).. Even here in Florence we went from $3.35 to $4 in 12 hours. They've even had to get state officials on some tv and radio programs to tell people that there is no gas shortage, there is no justification for any major price increases and to report any station doing this to your local sheriff's depth. My God people are stupid.. I'm just angry because my tank is low and I have a lot of driving to do this weekend with Carson's football Good luck Terry... Hopefully you keep your tail dry!
cory..its been all over the cable stations today about South Carolina. It seems like a panic and many stations are out of product. Im sure this will spread to every state. I just went to fill up and while I was at the pump..they changed the price sign..up 30 cents a gallon. This ia no doubt a panic situation!
