Tide #2 quits the team Tide's No. 2 quarterback quits due to lack of action By Associated Press October 12, 2006 Alabama fans wondering what to expect from new No. 2 quarterback Jimmy Barnes are in good company. Coach Mike Shula is curious, too. "I don't know, we'll find out," Shula said. "He hasn't had a lot of (practice) reps. He was pretty good in high school." Senior Marc Guillon quit the team this week citing lack of playing time, a midseason defection that leaves John Parker Wilson without a backup who has attempted a pass in college.
I have to wonder why would a guy quit the team like that? He's a Sr, he's never played very much either at Miami (no doubt why he transfered) or 'Bama, so why didn't he quit earlier, it seems like an odd time to let frustration get to him. I'll have to send him a copy of Tim O'Neils book on what it's like to be a walkon, talk about frustration. If he quit because he wanted to concentrate on getting ready for MCAT's or GRE's or something like that I could see it, but his teamates may need him if the starter gets injured and he won't be there for him. BTW KP I'm surprised that Greg McElroy's name wasn't mentioned along with Barnes. Greg was a great HS QB he played for the same coach as Chase Daniels of Missouri did and I would think he would be very competive with Barnes. What's the thinking on the two? Terry
I believe Shula is wanting to preserve McElroy's red-shirt. Some other discussions I have followed acknowledges that McElroy may have to play (depending on injuries of course) but the desire is to not play him this year.
