I'm scratching my head on this one guys. It is a step down no doubt. I could see if Greg Davis (current and much hated OCoord) has told Mack he is going to retire after the 2008 season. It would give Major a year to get back up to speed at Texas with regards to the team and offensive approach. But I serously doubt that is the case. There have been some posts that Major and Saban didn't get along and that Saban didn't let him have all the responsibilities that an OCoord is supposed to have. So maybe he and Nick had it out after the bowl game and Nick told him to find another situation. A lot of Texas people dream of Major returning to be the Head Coach when Mack is done, either he or Todd Dodge the HC at North Texas ( a popular and successfull hs coach and former UT QB before he went to UNT). kp what are 'bama people saying about this?
I'm certainly not connected to those folks in Austin, but what I've heard circulating is that first, Saban is a d!ck, and that makes a guy start looking. Applewhite will be QB's coach at Texas until the maligned Davis is gone, and then he'll step in. Seems like a reasonable plan...
It seems most folks think he is gone. I have heard that Saban is a workaholic and expects his assistants to be the same. That fits a lot of college coaches. I also understand the Saban encourages his assistants to interview as much as possible. It is a fact of a coaches life that they will move around and Saban's theory is to get all of the practice you can participating in the interview process. Personally, Applewhite seemed like a nice enough guy but to be honest I didn't notice much improvement in Alabama's offensive performance or the play calling. He appeared to be a very good recruiter though. I will be sorry to see him go but mainly because I think we need stability in our coaching staff for awhile.
