Bob Dylan? I laughed out loud when I read this one. A few years ago he was in the area playing a show at a local minor league ball park. A friend of mine works there and his job was to drive Dylan from the outfield entrance to the stage in a golf cart, Dylan told him when he climbed on the cart " Don't talk to me. Don't look at me. If you look at me I'll leave this f*ckin' place right now" Later that night he was arrested by the Long Branch NJ police when they found him wandering around a neighborhood peeking in people's windows. They said he was "disoriented". He was released. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/05/29/entertainment-us-usa-obama-medal-idUSBRE84S1A820120529
I guess. Obama probably listened to him while he was sucking on a hookah. Here is the definition of the award: The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award bestowed by the President of the United States and is—along with the comparable Congressional Gold Medal bestowed by an act of U.S. Congress—the highest civilian award in the United States. It recognizes those individuals who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".[3] The award is not limited to U.S. citizens and, while it is a civilian award, it can also be awarded to military personnel and worn on the uniform. Dylan fits right in with past winners including Bear Bryant, Roberto Clemente, Cesar Chavez, Thurgood Marshall, JFK, Mother Teresa, Colin Powell, Ronald Reagan etc.
Well I do agree with you that he doesn't really fit in, but part of that definition was "cultural" and he fits there. I guess Joan Baez will be next. Since you mention Barry Ob and a hookah....you might enjoy this. <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wWWOJGYZYpk" frameborder="0"></iframe>
I've been a big Dylan fan for many years. In college, we drank to his songs. However....Presidential Medal of Freedom? C'mon. It's a politically motivated appeal to boomers, saying, Look at me. I'm one of you.
I like a ton of 60s-70s music and while my own musical tastes have influenced my musician-singer-performer son to a great extent he and I don't agree on Bob Dylan. I never liked his stuff more than just a little......while my son does like his music a lot.
:? 8) I liked Bob Dylan too, but I don't know about receiving the Medal of Freedom. This is the same guy who beat and abused his wife, who was the mother of his five children. He's also the guy who publicly praised Lee Harvey Oswald in a drunken speech just weeks after the assassination of JFK... ......Everybody Must Get Stoned......JO'Co
With some very notable exceptions (Jesus, you may all be on this forum).. I detest the baby boomer generation.. absolutely detest it.. For a good long while, when the name Bob Dylan came up I would think "F*ck that guy".. Whenever I go into something blindly, I find myself second guessing my gut reaction. Then I met his son, he's so-so.. but reaffirmed my opinion of his father... F*ck that guy..
