After promising start, Campbell leaves Vols By DAVE HOOKER, hookerd@knews.com February 28, 2006 Corey Campbell's once promising career at Tennessee is over. UT coach Phillip Fulmer announced Tuesday that Campbell is leaving UT's football team. The safety intercepted seven passes in his three-year career, two in 2003 when he received consensus Freshman All-SEC honors. Campbell had four interceptions during his sophomore campaign but never secured a starting position last fall when UT was in dire need of a safety to start the season. UT instead started Antwan Stewart and Jonathan Hefney, two converted cornerbacks, at strong and free safety, respectively. As a junior in 2005, Campbell played in nine games, had one interception and one fumble recovery. Campbell was among the eight players who were either cited or arrested last year between January and August. He was arrested in March 2004 when authorities said he took 25 feet of coaxial cable at a Wal-Mart store in Knoxville. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted shoplifting last August. Campbell was stopped by police last June for a noise violation, and that's when officers discovered he had failed to appear in court for the shoplifting charge. Campbell, who is from Spring, Texas, will have one season of eligibility remaining.
