AFCA released theirs today. Johnny Football not on the team, Manti Te'o is....hmmm  AFCA Coaches AA Team
Two things: 1. Te'o is the first AFCA AA since Golden Tate. 2. How does a Heisman Trophy winner (which apparently JFF already is) not make the first team AA on offense, since the Heisman is an offensive award? I'm resigned to the fact that Te'o will not win the Heisman, so I'm not campaigning. I also congratulate JFF if and when he wins it. I just wonder how meaningful the award committee's statement of purpose is in view of situations like the above.
waaait a minute... I could fuss about our guy not being the top TE, but Ertz is also a stud. They'll both play a long time on Sundays. I want to talk about OL... and not in favor of Notre Dame, but rather Alabama. Chance Warmack is a great OL but he's not even their best OL. Barrett Jones is their best OL by 10 miles. He's played all 5 positions to fill whatever the greatest need for the team is. Regardless of which OL position you'd stick him at, he'd be their best guy there. That's my biggest beef.
This AA team is crap. The best OL I saw all year was Barrett Jones of Alabama. The 2nd best linebacker that I saw all year was 12Pac Defensive Player of the Year Chase Thomas of Stanford. I don't understand this AA team at all. Let's watch where some of these guys get drafted...
If Tyler Eifert is not the first TE drafted, in the first round, I'll eat my hat. I also look forward to Barrett Jones matching up with Louis Nix. That will be where the rubber meets the road.
Tyler Eifert has been hurt this year by the Irish not really having a WR that scares the opponent, so they can focus on him and take him out of the game. Plus the type of play that Eifert is so tough to cover on is the type of pass that a young QB like Golson is least comfortable throwing. Did you see those fades to the endzone against USC, Golson can't yet make that throw, if Jimmy Clausen was the QB then those are TD's every time. But Eifert has shown time and time again that when you give him the chance to make the play he makes it. Tyler will be a 1st day draft pick, he might be a late 1st round or 2nd round pick. I would love for the Texans to pick him up we use our TE (Owen Daniels) a lot in our passing scheme and Owen isn't getting any younger.
Re Chase Thomas: Seriously, if that guy spent any more time in our backfield, we'd have to put a blue jersey on him. We've handled every scheme thrown at us this year but we simply could not block that guy. I said it after the Stanford game, all the awards will go to this guy or that... but Thomas will be playing a long time (barring injury) on Sunday.
CBS Sports AA team is out. Johnny Football is the 1st team QB, Manti Te'o is 1st team LB. CBS AA Team
For ND fans Tuitt also was 1st team DT. Braxston Cave and Tyler Eifert were 2nd team and Louis Nix was on the third team. It's been quite a while since ND has had that many players make AA teams.
 :!: That AA team looks a lot better, but I have two quibbles: 1. No Chase Thomas? The 12Pac Defensive Player of the Year didn't even make 3rd string? Come on you Southerners! He's from Georgia! http://www.gostanford.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/thomas_chase00.html 2. Ifo Ekpre-Olomu is from my old home town of Chino, CA. He's not that good.
Manti' is 1st Team Academic All-American. What a kid and what a legacy he leaves. If the Irish can win the Nat'l Championship he will ascend to the mountain that has the Gipper, Knute, Leahy, Lujack, Hornung, Tony Rice, Ron Powlus..etc.
