That's the current rumor in print. Supposedly, the IU folks told Alford's representative that they have only two names on their short list, and Alford's is not one of them. Pretty interesting stuff for us Hoosiers.
I've heard that our coach could be on the IU wish list, but our AD will make it VERY difficult for him to leave. We have already set in motion the first phase of upgrades to Reed Arena, and phase II is already worked up. I'm not worried about anyone out bidding us, so I think it will be tough to pry BG out of College Station right now...
My sources tell me the two names on the short list are Lefty Driessel and Jerry Tarkanian. Should I believe them? Scott, your guy is a good one for sure, but I wouldn't think he'd be a candidate. I heard something a couple of weeks ago that included Tom Crean, Mark Few, Randy Wittman (IU alum in the pros), and Kevin Stallings (Vanderbilt). We'll see soon.
Sid, One of my friends heard Wittman was one of the two. We're not in the loop by any means, but he seems like a logical candidate...
Great suggestion, Don. If IU wants him, I'm sure he's available. Scott, I actually saw your coach's name in print today as a rumored candidate for the job along with Crean and Wittman. Hmmmm.
I thought I heard on the sports last night that there would be a press conference today in College Station to announce that Billy G was getting an extension to his contract and expanision/upgrade of basketball facilities.
IU coach/Gillespie <t>Scott,<br/> <br/> I heard on some sports radio program what you were mentioning on Texas A&M's coach and the more I think about it, the more I like it, being an IU fan. Having seen first hand what Gillespie can do here in El Paso with UTEP, I think he would do well in as the HC for the Hoosiers. He got the program here going again and is doing it with your Aggies as you can see. He is also a great recuiter.<br/> <br/> I really like Alford as a player and person but I'm not sure how good a coach he is. <br/> <br/> Tim</t>
Correct Terry. The announcement is coming up, maybe as soon as Friday. They are giving Billy a HUGE raise, and continuing with the improvements to Reed arena. We are serious about this, and Byrne is putting up the money to make sure everyone knows it...
Some are saying that IU offered him 2M/yr and a 1M/yr for assistants. If the Ag's match that won't he make more than Fran? It'll be interesting to find out what happens. But given that he's a Texas boy I can't see him going to Indiana myself, he has great connections to the talent here in Texas and Texas is becoming the equal to or better than Indiana in terms of basketball talent.
I heard the new contract will be equal to what Barnes has at Texas. Also don't forget Billy's Momma lives here, and she loves A&M... I don't think there's any doubt we have a tremendous talent pool here. It might not be as well developed at the high school level as some of the "basketball" states, but the physical talent is definitely here.
