Too lazy to re-write this: "ACC... ACC.... really? FSU stormed through the ACC.... killed the second best team at their place in Death Valley. Auburn last night surprised the hell out of me by being so damned competitive and almost pulling it off..... proving to me anyways that the SEC was indeed a tough out. The final drive and win was more a tribute and a hats off to a fine team in Florida State with great athletes and good coaching than it was any sort of mandate on the ACC." The SEC was a very good 7-3 in the bowls and I have to give Auburn credit for representing the conference well last night. FSU wasn't just an "ACC" champion.... the best the ACC ( 5-6 bowl record ) had to offer.... the noles were the best team in the country and they had to play balls to the wall to knock off the SEC Champion Tigers... The other 2 FSU titles in the last 20 years for some reason didn't impress me all that much but this team played with a heart that I didn't think they had and I definitely come away impressed with the job Jimbo Fisher has done at FSU. Looks like a home run hire for the noles at this point.
Stu I liked that graphic! Send me a link to it. SEC, great league at the top. But the hype is over done.
oh look who has the slipper on the other foot now? Go ahead and dance, Princess. The floor is yours. I can't believe you started another topic to cover the same shitty point you had in another thread. Butt hurt, much?
Could have left it there..... but that was specifically an NC game topic and this "all hail the ACC conference" thing could be the subject of continuous debate. Although I don't really believe that you have suddenly adopted the "dumpster fire" of a conference soley on the season long performance of one truly great team.... a team that in fact has a 40 year history of having some truly great teams ACC or not....
I'll be the first to say that I'm unhappy about how the Pac12 did this year in the bowl games. It's hard to fault Stanford, but I will anyway because screw Stanford. Arizona State just shat the bed. Wazzu 'Couged' it. Everyone else one took care of business against pretty good competition. I just find it funny that you hung your hat all year on NC game performance, but now you want to talk about all the other games. You must be proud of that murderer's row of: -Rice -Houston -Duke -Iowa (the original dumpster fire) -Georgia Tech -Wisconsin -Okie State. (that was a nice win btw.. by the team you spent all year saying wasn't worthy)
BTW I think Saban had it right when he said the difference between the SEC and the rest of college football is on the lines. He said everybody has great skill players, SEC teams have the edge along the lines. I think he's right. I'm not sure why though. Conventional wisdom has always held that the South and the West had great skill players because of the weather allowing year around play outside. But the OL/DL is about bulk and strength something that you don't need to be outside to aquire. So why are there so many good/great linemen in the SEC?
You know, MCG doesn't get it, but that's not news. I don't know of one person on this board who said anything negative about the SEC following last night's game. Corey was right when he described the ND guys' reference to FSU as our conference brother/stepbrother as tongue-in-cheek. None of us have any love for FSU, but we and many others are happy to see someone other than an SEC team as the national champ. That's not a knock on the SEC. It's just a normal reaction to a changing of the guard, however temporary. Corey's retorts above regarding the conference bowl records are prompted only by MCG's persistent baiting and are not unsolicited. That MCG....he sure is a master baiter.
LOL....That was good Gipper.... Colin Cowherd also has a theory as to why they should tape most SEC players interviews....
Hey... I'm the one that voiced strong opinions that the SEC wouldn't do very well in the bowls and that Auburn would be crushed. I'm just refuting my own opinions in that the SEC actually did better than I expected. RE: the bowl schedule SEC teams played highly placed members of the Big 12 and ACC and Big 12..... and won. Neb. beat Ga. w/o Aaron Murray and Auburn gave one hell of an account of themselves.... much better than I thought possible. The only SEC member who really was a letdown was the team that has been a key part of the BCS Title run dominance.... Alabama :? I'm just saying that I was pleasantly surprised..... and feeling pretty good about the league going into next year..... and feeling like my own team will again struggle next season because the SEC and FSU aren't going to take a time out.... aren't going to let up and therefore UF is still in a world of hurt next year...
I think the speed and atheticism of the SEC lineman may be what Saban is referring to. Size and strength can be easily duplicated but speed is probably harder to find.
I'm sorry but that #8 for FSU who is an All American isn't very fast in a conventional manner. Our Louis Nix who was an All American last year and likely 1st round draft choice isn't very fast.
We get it ... SEC stinks up the bowls, you get to say you were right about your bowl predictions ... SEC does well in bowls, you get to say you were right all along about the awesomeness of the SEC. It's a win-win ... you get to be right either way.
Wendy said this much better than I have (or will) but still.. Dude, you're arguing with yourself here? Aaron Murray wasn't QB at Georgia? Nebraska was without Taylor Martinez. That kid at Georgia led them to a win over Georgia Tech who is officially one of your 'quality bowl wins.' Stop before you lose your own argument with yourself.
Legitimately I ventured my opinion that I thought the SEC was down and it would come out in the bowls. Not trying any of Wendy's mumbo jumbo.... just what I thought. I guess if you think the results agree WZT with my original opinion then so be it. After review of what actually happened however I think I was a little harsh.... and I have a different opinion. That too hard?
As far as line play goes. I think the OL play and talent has vastly improved in the SEC, especially during this run. Where the SEC has historically done well is with DL. That's the worst academic position on the recruiting board. I know some teams have gone the JUCO route (does anyone remember the argument years ago about the SEC not using JUCOs?). I know a lot of the great DL recruits are kids in the southeastern region and are simply staying home. It just is what it is.. not get all Clintonian, but it's true.
