Is Woods showing a glimpse of a tired Tiger?
U.S. Open might be sign of wear in chase of Nicklaus' majors title mark

OAKMONT, PA. — The 107th U.S. Open was there for the taking. Tiger Woods was so close to the lead, he could almost reach out and not only touch it, but put a stranglehold on it.

Woods was on the 13th green at Oakmont Country Club on Sunday afternoon, hot on the trail of Angel Cabrera. Four feet stood between Woods and a birdie that would have rocked not only the grounds at Oakmont, but the world of Cabrera.

"It was an easy little putt," Woods said.

The telling thing isn't that Woods missed the putt, banging the ball through the right-to-left break. The telling thing is the way Woods agonized over the putt, frozen by doubt.

The Woods the world knows and can't get enough of relishes such moments, doesn't allow even a hint of doubt to creep into his mind. He sees an opportunity and pounces on it, hungrily devours it.

The Woods the world saw on the 13th green Sunday at Oakmont could hardly bring himself to pull back his putter. Woods looked about as comfortable as a man in a hostage video, as if it were him — not Cabrera — who never had won a major.
