For those of us who don't give a "frog flip" about basketball the college baseball season began this weekend. Yeah I love the Canes but honestly college baseball is a great and under appreciated sport that gets no media coverage and I can pull for all the teams (Yeah even the Cornhuskers AJ). Canes swept Rutgers this weekend and last I looked the #1 Gators had a two game lead of Cal St Fullerton but Cal came back to defeat the Gators in game 3. Good luck to all your teams and let me know how they fared this weekend...
Thanks for starting the conversation. I'm a college baseball fan, although my ND team hasn't done much since their CWS appearance in 2002.
The Irish have the son of Craig Biggio on the team this fall as a freshman. I expect us to be better (at least from what I"ve read) but still a ways to go to be as good as they were during that 2000-2002 run under current LSU coach Paul Mianeri. Texas...well we're Texas we should be good, nuff said.
Buckeyes win 2 of 3 in Big East Challenge in Florida to open our season. A young team and some Jr college transfers in this year. Should be a better year than last in Beal's opening season. 15 lettermen back from last year.
Out in the Wild West... All the usual suspects are loaded again: CS Fullerton; UC Irvine; Long Beach State; 12Pac schools etc.... Especially loaded this season will be UCLA, with pitching to burn...
Purdue picked as B10 favorite by CollegeBaseballInsider.com and Baseball America. Second in B10 coaches poll. Start the season going 3-0 in B10-Big East Challenge with wins over UConn, Cincy, and Notre Dame.
Thanks for the topic Ralph!! It's been a long off-season, and I'm ready to see what the Aggies can do. The renovation of Olsen Field is complete, and we are back at the top of the facilities world again. To start off the Aggies blasted Illinois-Chicago 26-2 over 3 games. Not much of a test, but you gotta start somewhere. I want to see my boys in Omaha again this summer!
Purdue getting a new field...Alexander Field. Might be ready for March 10 but there have been construction delays.
Wow, impressive fields Scott and Stu and almost imposing...Lol, the Canes field is more like an extension of south beach with palm trees and nothing as nice as what you have or will have. But you can get a cuban sandwhich from the girl wearing the g-string in the parking lot and try to avoid contact with the guy wearing the same outfit across the way...
Looks great Stu! Good to see another "northern" school investing in baseball. Ralph, I gotta get down there for a game... and i will DEFINITELY be looking for your Cuban vendor!
Some nice baseball facilities in the B1G TEN now. Not too bad for our less than ideal weather. Stu, any idea on the seating capacity in the new stadium in West Lafayette?
For the first time since 2005 the Hurricane baseball team is 7-0 to start a season. We play Florida Atlantic on Wednesday and then the #1 Gators come down to Coral Gables for a three game series. The crocs have owned us for the last three years and being rated number one coming into this series would surely be favored, but hopefully our talent has picked up this year. But we have been playing what should be considered warm up games up to this point so we won't know until next weekend. Two of the three games we played this weekend were cut short do to time curfews put in place. Has anyone ever heard of this happening twice in a weekend...?
Don, currently Lambert Field (built in 1965 because the prior baseball field was on the site of Mackey Arena construction) holds 1,100. The new field will have a capacity of 1,500, with expansion plans to 2,500.
